Just seen the red card from last nights uefa money greed league modern football knockout game played in front of 75k tourists (i didn’t watch it, better things to be doing)……..so why all the fuss, it was a high boot at rib cage height, which nani followed through with, which left an imprint on his chest!!!!! EXACTLY the same happened in w/ham v everton game, 2 identical challenges (like nani’s) and TWO red cards (c.cole & d.gibson)…WHY ALL THE FUSS, GET OVER IT.

On a side note, i hope all the “wigan reds” had a good evening in front of the T.V watching a team that they only chose to “support” because they were bullied at primary school into following them because their mates did …..PATHETIC!

MAN YOOOO ARE OUT, DEAL WITH IT, IT’S NOT YOUR TOWN TEAM ANYWAY,YOUR NOT EVEN THAT BOTHERED

I didnt think it was a red card based on my understanding of the rules (which is probably sh*t in all fairness)

However on the flip side of that as I pointed out to my colleagues today if that was a Wigan player at Old Trafford it would of been not only a straight red but a few yellow cards for all the players suirrounding the referee along with a fine to any club official who dared to speak out against it.

My heart bleeds for them it really does

IMO Nani’s initial movement isn’t even a challenge – it’s an attempt to control the ball & I don’t think that it’s dangerous or reckless at the time it was made as the Real player isn’t that near to the ball & is coming in from an angle behind Nani.
It becomes a foul when Nani’s momentum carries him in to the Real player after the Real player has won the ball but for me the Real player can see Nani’s foot is raised prior to him diving in & so i wouldn’t class it as even a caution
However after the initial contact there is definitely a secondary movement of Nani’s foot in a kind of mid-air stamping motion which doesn’t look like a natural continuation of his momentum & is deserving of a sending off. It’s somet I noticed the first time I saw the reverse angle & at full speed
If the ref saw that secondary movement he got everything spot on. If he didn’t & is only giving it for the initial contact then it is very very harsh
Either way though i think ultimately nani deserved to go

On a side note, if Rio Ferdinand had clapped in my face like he did to that ref at the end he’d be having a misconduct report whacked in against him n’all

By the letter of the law its a sending off. Using an ounce of common sense it isn’t.

Totally agree on having no sympathy though.

I think it was a straight red, no question.

If any player goes in with his foot that high he runs the risk of a red card. “Had his eye on the ball”? Nonsense. He should know who’s around him.

If it had been a Real player doing that SAF would have been apopleptic (how would we know?). As said above if it had been a Wigan player a few more would have been carded too.

He could have killed him!

He’s here now….ow dooo muttmeister………….indeed they were scrubbed off, but nani’s was a follow through with a lunge motion at the end……cole/gibson were just raised feet with no injury

given nani’s height, he must have jumped a fair height to get up to his knockers/chest!

ferdinand should be banned from ALL next seasons group games and fergie should receive a 3 game touch line ban (only going off what iv’e seen on SSN) didn’t watch the game!

This one won’t be though, even if there is an appeal.

Different attitude to challenges such as Nani’s in European games.
He must have been aware there was an opposing player going for that ball otherwise there was no need for him to have his foot so high up. He also knew he was on dodgy ground because he feigned injury in an attempt to diminish the recklessness of his challenge and stop the referee making an immediate, and therefore rash, decision.

                And Ferguson….!

I have long though the man has far too much influence in the English game. He puts pressure on referees not to make decisions against Man United, especially at Old Trafford, and rants and raves when things don’t go his way. It refreshing to see that pressure not having any effect in Europe.

A hypocritical, bullying egomaniac. I mean, not speaking to the media because he was too angry and upset! How old is this man?

Retire now. The game will be much the better without him.

Notwithstanding my dislike of all things ManU, I thought that red card was harsh, and it changed the course of the game. Before Nani’s ill-timed challenge, the game was evenly balanced, but afterwards there was only ever going to be one winner.

I disagree about the wheels coming off. Not having a European competition as a distraction will mean they will win the league by the end of April.

It did spoil the game from a neutrals viewpoint, which could have gone either way.

Harsh, probably, but correct if you strictly apply the laws of game.
I wonder what Ferguson’s reaction would have been had a red card been shown for that same challenge on Nani by, say, Suarez?

Did Terry not get sent off against Barcelona in last years comp! Chelsea duly got on with the task in hand and scored twice to dump Barcelona out ! The thing with Utd and their fans is that they feel they have some sort of stranglehold on all things football when in fact they are just a debt riddled club who are king amongst shits ! Both the German and Spanish leagues piss all over the Prem in my opinion !
