According to Liverpool fans (and Klopp for that matter) the challenge on Joe Gomez last week was a shocker and a red card. The challenge by Van Dijk last night was fine as he clearly won the ball beforehand.
Now obviously both players did win the ball but what happened after is vastly different. One collided with the player, the other studded him half way up his leg. What are your thoughts on the two TL?

12 December 2018 at 7:15 pm #173957As I understand it “winning the ball” is totally irrelevant – even though the pundits and the man down the pub claim they know better.

Perhaps a regular thread piece if he doesn’t mind the hassle. ;) CLs version of Dermot Gallagher on Sky.

I’ve not seen the Ben Mee challenge in real time so can’t comment.
The van Dijk challenge is most definitely a red; studs up and out of control. I cannot understand how he’s got away with that.Even my blatantly biased work colleague admitted it was a red but suspect his opinion might have been different had they lost.
12 December 2018 at 10:16 pm #173966Van Dijk totally out of control and studs up ….. a great tackle at any point up to 1985……iffy from there to 2005….. definite red at any point in recent years

I’ll be honest – i haven’t seen the MeeGomez tackle but I did read Klopp’s comments and they were utter jibberish. He stated that the ref should stop challenges like that but also said that it wasn’t a foul. If he doesn’t think it’s a foul then he should shut his mouth. How the help does he expect the ref to stop the game for something it’s laws allow. If anyone can show me a clip of it I’ll give me opinion but if a an Klopp says it wasn’t (but he still wanted the ref to not allow it???) then it’s pretty safe to say it was fine
The one last night was a shocker. He’s lunged in, studs showing, out of control, unable to stop himself, barely glanced the ball and then caught the player studs up, half way up his leg. Like someone else has said, that he glanced the ball before contact with the player is irrelevant just as it is if a player clears the ball and with his follow through catches an opponent studs up in his chest
13 December 2018 at 11:35 am #173974There is links to both tackles on the original post TL.
13 December 2018 at 3:49 pm #173979There is links to both tackles on the original post TL.I clicked on the first link & all it was were several still shots (one of the tackle when no contact has been made) & several others of the players involved and a robotic voice explaining what Dyche & Klopp had both said

Did manage to find it on another clip though – the difference between the 2 for me is that the original tackle for me was fine (from the side but gets his leg in front, clears it away & is always in control of his body & movement) whereas Van Diyk’s was a foul from the moment he lunged in, studs up & out of control.
Contact after the ball had gone was due to the momentum of both players in the Mee challenge whilst in Van Diyk’s it was caused purely by the speed & force of his lungeKlopp was right, it wasn’t a foul on Gomez, so I’ve no idea why he decided to say that but still whinge about it – players can get injured in perfectly legitimate tackles

13 December 2018 at 5:02 pm #173985This guys is the very reason VAR should not be introduced to the game. Its all part of the sport and the most famous iffy decisions are still being discussed donkeys years later. Opinions are what makes football and referees are also a massive part of the whole make up. IMHO VAR is going to take away the soul of the sport. Let the man in the middle do his job and if he makes a howler of a cock up so what players and managers also make mistakes but we forgive and forget them.

The sooner it is brought in the better, too many important decisions are missed and for me most of them are too essential to mess up on.
Anyway, if VAR doesn’t make it despite my great protestations, the alternative is the FA should bring in a new rule and that would be that only the Captain can talk with the ref. The only purpose of players hassling refs is to sway the refs decision. The amount of intimidation is rubbish.
16 December 2018 at 7:23 pm #174099To add to the big club little club debate, same incident happened at Chelsea today as Naismith last week and a yellow card given.
