          Is right! Definitely him.

How he never gave us a penalty when Kevin Sharp was tripped in the area, is beyond me.

And when Goater scored with his hand, he asked him:

“Did you handle it?” Now, if he had to ask, then surely he should have had reasonable belief that he HAD, and should of disallowed the goal. Of course, Goater said that he hadn’t handled it.

Kevin Sharp tripped??? He was tackled just below the belly button. Almosty cut him in two. I also remember Joe Royles post match interview when he was asked if he thought Goater had put the ball in with his hand. He said “No” then stuck his tongue right into his cheek. Hated Citeh ever since.

Didn’t he apologise to mathias a few years after the match?

Too of the most shocking decisions I’ve seen in a Latics match – felt like I’d been mugged after the game

To be fair to the ref he wasn’t the only one who didn’t think that it was a penalty

I remember leaping up screaming for a pen at the time & there weren’t that many other Latics fans who did. Also when I got home & watched the highlights on the telly, Nigel Spackman was a pundit in the studio & he maintained that it wasn’t a penalty either – not sure I agreed with his logic behind it not being a penalty as he said that the ball was running away from Kevin Sharp & as he wouldn’t have got it, it wasn’t a foul which doesn’t really stand up to the laws of the game but there you go
Some people who I do remember thinking it was a penalty were 2 City fans in the Platt lane end who, as soon as Wiekens made contact with Sharp, just got a look of horror on their faces & heads went in hands quickly followed by a look of disbelief when it wasn’t given

As for the handball – I think it was handball but can’t be certain that it was. If the ref thought the same at the time (although he has since admitted he got it wrong) then he couldn’t give it. I’d had a few beers at the time so can’t be certain but I’m sure that the linesman flagged at the time & then put it down which was why there was a bit of a delayed reaction from the city crowd to celebrating it. Also, a friend of mine works at City & was involved in working with Shaun Goater quite alot in the various charities he runs for kids in Bermuda & Manchester. Anyway when he first told me he was working with him (as he knew I hated him for that game) & asked him to ask hm about that – my mate assured me that in all seriousness he maintains that he didn’t handle it
However, as someone else has pointed out the fact that the ref had some doubt in his mind & asked the player himself before awarding the goal is an absolute farce

They were going to make us away fans stay behind in the ground, but when the City lot all went on the pitch, they announced over the tannoy “can all the Wigan supporters please make your way out of the ground”.

Fair enough you’d think. You didn’t want to have them rubbing our noses in it. But then came the pearler. The made all the away coaches queue up and wait outside of the away end, at a standstill. The row of derelict houses next to us, was ideal territory for people attacking the coaches. My window got hit by several eggs and stones. Nothing big like a brick though, thankfully. And they were all walking past, giving it the big one. Hated ‘Ciiie’ ever since. I won’t go there, as I won’t give them my money.

As for ‘that goal’, I saw it straight away, with the angle I was sat at. I was in the temporary stand they had put up in the corner.

I was in the Gene Kelly stand too. Was tough to take at the time but made alot easier with our early domination of City in the Prem. :D

i was sat about 10 rows from the back & about half way along the stand behind the goal & didn’t see any handball

What i do remember is that the ref appeared to give it only for the liner to flag about somet, drop his flag & then the goal was given which led to a bit of a stop start celebration from the city fans. But when some bloke in the bogs not long afterwards started ranting at me about Goater cheating i didn’t know what he was on about

Another thing I do remember from that game is that Graeme Jones should have broke the net with a free header from about 4 yards out off a free kick with about 5 minutes left but instead only managed to break the bar

We should also have had a cert penalty in the 2nd half of the 1st leg for handball too

Its brought back many a memory that. I can still feel the old guts wrenching when their fans were singing ‘One nil in your Cup final’ dancing on the pitch in front of us. That and Reading away in the play offs were pretty tough to stomach. Not sure i could get that angry after a match now!

We were never going to win that night at Maine Road. I think if we’d scored, it would’ve been disallowed.

And Reading? The sly trick with all the balloons in our half of the pitch as we defended….that should never have been allowed to happen. I was fuming after that match.

losing at Reading was made all the worse when we got back to my son’s car and some scrote had smashed the drivers door window and nicked his radio. Had to drive home with a piece of perspex “borrowed” from an ad from the front of Dixon’s (?) shop wedged across the opening.
