Jesus wet we think we’ve got problems with our pitch, did you see the FA CUP highlights last night of their game and they’ve only placed 27 games so far this season and still 11 games at home to play (not including the 5th round game) no flaming chance, theirs more bounce on Ainsdale beech than their pitch good luck to them.

There must be a river running behind their ground also because it can’t be anything to do with overuse and no proper maintenance and rest through the summer can it?.
Oh, but then again, it is used all year round like ours with 26 fat gets running around on it. Is it just a coincidence that they have a shit pitch as well as us? I’ll leave that to the experts.

26 fat gets who haven’t been on it since August.

Plenty of dual pitches in pretty good condition around the country.

Saints played their FIRST game of the season last week and the pitch was a mess even before kick off. Who plays on it every other week in winter? Some football reserve side. Maybe it’s football that ruins it? I’ll leave that to the experts.

The DW pitch is relaid every summer. Brand new. When the goons finish it’s in superb condition. When they start their season again its a mess. Cant blame them for that one horc.

No idea what goes on with the saints pitch egg. The drainage must be shocking.

A young lass who lives across the road from my dad is dating one of Wigan Athletics groundsmen. He is a latics fan but admitted that football games cause far more damage to the pitch than rugby!

On Rochdale’s pitch – back in 1999 when our Auto Windscreens game against them was called off God knows how many times I was working with a Rochdale fan whose best mate was a groundsman at a golf course & also a Rochdale fan. Anyway, Rochdale were having trouble with their groundsman (he may have quit, but I forget exactly) & their pitch was a nightmare with even the smallest bit of rain causing postponements so this mate of the bloke I worked with offered his services, took core samples & temporary solutions.
The problem was that the stuff underneath the soil had compacted down into a virtual solid mass & wasn’t allowing any drainage & I don;t think that they’ve ever had the money to put it right in the intervening 19 years

On the DW pitch – from what i can gather it has a drainage problem. Latics play on it during the winter months when it’s colder, wetter & darker so it’s only logical that more damage will occur then rather than when the rugby play on it when (for the most part) it is warmer, drier & lighter. And lets not forget that even if the pitch isn’t relaid, the rugby never play on it in June so it gets intensive treatment & rest then so it should be like a bowling green in August
That said, I’m not buying that football by its very nature causes more damage to the pitch than rugby league. They slide on the grass to score, they dive on it to tackle, they’re constantly running back & forth in a line across the whole pitch whereas in football they’ll be periods when chunks of the pitch are unused for long periods & they also have regular bits of their game where 8 or more heavy blokes are digging their feet into the turf to prevent a ball carrier moving forward or trying to push him forward.
I’ve also seen at times in the past what a game of rugby league does to that pitch if its played when its raining heavily. There was a GB v Australia test there a while back that absolutely destroyed the pitch

That what you say about Rochdale pitch, it was probably a result of the previous ground staff over-forking wet and waterlogged pitches, which would’ve broken down the particles in the soil, hence the compact mass of earth they now have. It basically has caused a waterproofing effect.

All of them have too much play on them. All need to be rested and maintained in summer and not just for a few weeks. Our pitch has fantastic drainage or does all that water that gets sprayed on there just vanish.
Just repeat what I said the other day it is neither football or Rugbys fault, it is overplay. Its just unfortunate that Rugby is played in the summer when the pitch and those millions of little turf grass plants need to be nurtured and encouraged to grow.

But the rugby DON’T play on it though Donny. That’s the point.

The groundsman told me this as well. Said that if you go home and throw yourself all over your lawn you won’t do too much damage. You kick a football off the floor with wet grass wearing studs/blades and you will bring up blades of grass every time.

Even pitches that have no rugby on them tend to have areas around the goals and the halfway line that are a bit dodgy. As Tyldesley says, rugby would ruin the entire pitch and not just patches. They don’t even scrummage in league so that takes away the chunks that happen on union pitches.

The DW pitch is nakerd because of where it’s built and the fact it wasn’t raised like it was advised to do because it would have cost too much money.

What do you mean Rugby dont play on it? They play on it from now untill October with a short break in summer which isnt long enough.
Rugby is certainly played in summer at St Helens and Rochdale.
The pitch is nackered through too much sport.
Manchester Uniteds Carrington training ground is built on a peat bog and its pitches are amazing.

I’ve said this a few times, the pitch at the sports arena less than 50 yards away from the DW is always in superb nick. Surely this must also be built on boggy ground. Funnily enough I was delivering some training there the other week and the chubsters were training on there. They kept me amused whilst I was having my dinner. The groundsman was pulling his hair out, he had told them to move around the entirety of the pitch but they stayed in one place and it was looking like a paddy field.

Well that makes it even worse then Egg because the brand new pitch hasn’t got time to establish in so short a period.
