What do you think? Would you have him back again?

25 February 2011 at 12:15 pm #60387I think he would be a good back up for and a potential number 1 next season if we didnt manage to sign Ali.
Give him a chance Bobby!

From what i remember of Roy, he was a great shot stopper but struggled more with crosses and i think it would be too much of a risk considering players with problems we’ve had before e.g Marlon King
Think i’d have him back as a number two.
25 February 2011 at 1:59 pm #60392I think its unfair to compare him to an out and out thug like Marlon King but i do understand where you are coming from. I personally dont think he would be a problem however i also think it is time we signed a young keeper (or promoted one) to grow and get better rather than keep signing over 30s. Nice thought because of his connection with us but reality must prevail here. If i was Martinez though, i would let him train here as they are friends and ex team mates.
If we went down then i would possibly be interested in him.
25 February 2011 at 2:17 pm #60394A fantastic player for us in his prime – I never remember him being dodgy on crosses but his kicking was a bit gash. And what the hell he was doing in the league game away at Man City in 1999 where he deliberately put the ball down on the edge of the area & allowed terry cooke to score the only goal of the game I’ll never know (well he said that he realised he was going to go out of the area & knew that a yellow card would mean he was suspended for the Auto Windscreens final but surely flinging it out of touch would have been a better option than dropping the ball at the opposition players feet!!!)
Still challenges for the number 1 spot in my all-time bext XI latics team
I think he’d have made it to the very top & for a long time if he’d moved from us to either a lower level top flight or high level championship club where playing regularly against better players would have developed his game. I remember him saying once when he was linked with a move to Arsenal that he wouldn’t go as being a back up keeper at a top club would be worse for his development than being first choice at Latics so I was always a bit surprised that a season or 2 later he made just that move only to United. I know he broke their clean sheets record whilst he was there & picked up various medals but being a back up for so long didn’t help him & probably gave him other distractions so to speak whilst he wasn’t playing
I’m amazed that no team wants him but I don’t think bringing him back here would be much of a forward step.As for his drinking, i remember going to a player of the year do at the end of his first season with us. John Deehan mentioned somet about his nickname (earned on the clubs pre-season tour of Northern Ireland) was George Best coz of his exploits out there. Also, when Gavin Johnson refused to get up & accept his prize for drinker of the year, Roy stepped up & polished off his yard of ale for him!!
25 February 2011 at 5:02 pm #60401His drinking habits are what lead to him leaving Rangers after only one appearance.
The publicans, nightclub owners, croupiers and lap dancers of Glasgow were in floods of tears when he moved on.

Bit of a shame that he’s without a club, really.
I’m not convinced that he could do a job for us any more but he would do the business at a decent Championship team.
I was torn between Carroll and Filan when I was choosing my favourite XI.
26 February 2011 at 12:39 pm #60432Why not give him, a chance? He’s a decent enough keeper who left on good terms. If we offer him a short term contract and he keeps off the sauce then it would be a good signing. Al Habsi will be off in the summer anyway.
