        Sammy,

It seems obvious to me that Keane didn’t want any fuss regardless of his stature, you must give him that. To suggest going to the reception or telling folk who he is diverts from the real issue of this silly database.

I’ll guarantee you if a comparison was made with the other 19 clubs, you wouldn’t get anything as opaque and at least some middle ground (common sense).

The least fuss would have been for him to ring the club and make prior arrangements or call in at reception on the day and access the stadium that way. He could have paid his £25, or whatever it was, regardless.
I agree that common sense wasn’t applied in this case. Maybe the person in the ticket office didn’t recognise him and maybe Roy Keane was pleased about that. What doesn’t surprise me is that he was “a little aggressive towards our staff” so perhaps they though he wasn’t suitable to be let in anyway.

I think the club statement explains situation very well and why this policy is in place. The problem is we are not like the other 19 clubs. So, should we ever be in a position were we are, I would expect this rule to be relaxed.

I’m having a pre-match pint with a group of Wigan lads all supporting Liverpool. They have all got tickets in the away end, but if there wasn’t a policy in place, they ‘d be free to purchase tickets in with Wigan supporters just because they have a Wigan postcode and don’t have a Scouse accent. Thankfully my mates are nice people, but there are also Liverpool supporting Wiganners who aren’t so nice. Therefore, it’s a totally necessary policy. Th same people who are saying it’s a stupid policy would the be the same people complaining when half the East Stand is filled with Scousers / Mancunians / Geordies etc.

Wigan is unique – especially as a Premier League club – in that a large proportion of its population do not support the town’s team, hence why this policy is not adopted by other clubs in the league.

I’ve seen on here that people are claiming Keane did not cause a fuss? Really? So if you call getting aggressive with ticket office staff and stewards as not making a fuss, then yes, no fuss was made.

If the man chooses to turn up unannounced, and by all accounts, bearded, wearing a cap and virtually unrecognisable – especially to a ticket office employee who’d probably recognise Sean O’Loughlin but hasn’t a clue who Roy what’s his face is, then he doesn’t deserve sympathy. All it would have taken is a simple and civil request to speak to the ticket office manager, the Club Secretary, the press officer– or anyone that could have resolved the situation.

Perhaps Roy Keane feels he is above ringing through for a ticket in advance like most normal people – and there we have the key word…’normal’.
