Wigan Athletics pursuit of Argentinian striker Marco Ruben has finished.
The deal was almost complete, but Chairman Dave Whelan has put an end to speculation.
He Said, ‘In order not to upset some of our fans, we can only consider such a phenomenal amount of money if the player has been a regular goal scorer in the top flight. There is no reason why we wouldn’t be able to sign a 23 year old 25 a season top flight player for £7m, so we will wait for one to come available.’

Sorry pal, I’m just bemused by some of the moaning.
As I have replied to another thread:
To the moaners: Reserve player for a side who finished 5th in La Liga last season and so can’t be any good???????
What if he had been a Utd, Arsenal, City, Spurs, Chelsea or Liverpool reserve.
I remember a few years back some young lad played for Arsenal reserves and there was a fuss when he got picked for England. Sure you know who I’m on about, similarly this young lad has played for Argentina.
Don’t some of you moaning and questioning Martinez think the Argentina coach saw something to allow him to challenge Carlos Tevez?

            Oh, fair enough!

I agree with you. Really looking forward to seeing this fella. I think some of our FANS could do with thinking a bit bigger, sometimes. They moan when we don’t spend……then moan when we ARE spending. “What if he’s rubbish? What if….might be…blah, blah, blah…”

And what if he’s fu*king amazing? Live a little, eh? FFS!

Fair point Ticslad but are you seriously telling me that you don’t think the deal (if the rumoured price is correct) is overpriced for a reserve team/2nd flight player with his goalscoring record?

I will of course bow down to the footballing knowledge of Argentina’s coach, Bobby & even Whelan but it seems a hell of alot to pay to me. £2mill to £3mill maybe but £7mill????

Not knowing the exchange rate malarky but i have read on other sites that the fee is 5million euros

£7mill is a huge investment for us but it’s nice to see. Latics fans moan we show no ambition then when Whelan does loosen the purse strings everyone is worried about the amount. The fee is probably made up of a down payment then add ons depending on appearances, goals etc.

Villareal paid £5 mil for him and didn’t want to sell him so we had to go in with a larger offer.

Roberto has obviously had his sights set on the lad and do you think Villareal would pay big money to River Plate and publically state they didn’t want to sell him if he wasn’t any good?

Signing any player is a gamble and £7 mil for us is a big signing BUT it’s an exciting signing and the lad is a huge prospect. I was happy with the Caldwell signing but i’m actually excited about this one and fingers crossed JR will be the next player in and i’d like to see Leon Britton, small firey midfielder who won’t duck out of a challenge and will be a good squad player to compete with our current midfielders.

I’m wondering if the £7m includes wages, because it does seem an awful lot to spend on an unproven. Even then, that would be a very attractive salary package – unless he has signed a 50-year contract!

Seriously, have you ever considered the merits of any player you haven’t previously seen quoted in the press gossip columns?

And, honestly, how many times I have you seen Leon Britton play?

I have seen Leon play a few times as I always followed Swansea when they were live on tv and always looked out for their results, etc due to Roberto being the manager. I haven’t watched him week in week out but have seen enough of him to tell you he is a good little player who is a very keen tackler, similar to Brown and Cattermole who some people on here claim we miss.

Also, having seen the column in the NOTW over the weekend regarding JR I was hoping this would come off but if Rooney, Drogba or Tevez are available (3 who we haven’t been linked with) I would gladly encourage Roberto to switch his targets ;)
