Still being spouted all over the media without any thought or reason for it ,still have many arguments over this Subject but what does anyone think about them still being utttered in 2020?
Nowt going on at the moment but this subject always needs an airing from Rome to time because it never goes away.26 April 2020 at 2:28 pm #186083Living nearly 10 whole miles north, and working nearly 10 whole miles east of Wigan, I genuinely never have any concept of any rugby being played. I never know if Warriors have a match from one month to the next. This is because nobody talks about rugby because nobody cares about rugby.
Are they on lockdown??
26 April 2020 at 3:30 pm #186084For me the whole thing gathered pace when they realised the challenge cup final generated maximum national publicity in the media
By Reaching the then massive challenge cup final annually and obviously winning it it gave them enough publicity to fuel the ‘ rugby town’ line.
They reached the final 8 years in a row Between 1988 and 1995 and it was such a formality for their supporters that they discussed where they would be staying the year after for next years final.
The extra exposure and income arguably allowed them to become a full time club in early nineties.
I actually find this myth interesting and always looK to explore and discuss it because without this it will continue to be spouted especially by the ill informed media.
Always worth a discussion especially on sites like ours .26 April 2020 at 9:20 pm #186085Lazy journalism end of.More people have football season tickets than joke sport season tickets. Unfortunately not all are Latics fans but watch the big 4 around us. Wigan ammy league is huge and thousands of lads play football every week. So take the numbers who watch and add to the numbers who play and it dwarfs the amount who follow the joke sport. This is never reported. Rugby town my arse.
26 April 2020 at 10:34 pm #186087Clearly a rugby town. We put the word Wigan on the map in places like Spain Honduras and Egypt.
27 April 2020 at 2:02 am #186088I don’t think anyone truly believes there are more people in Wigan who are playing or watching rugby than football.
Similarly, I don’t think anyone can deny that more home fans turn up at the DW to watch a rugby game than a football game.
It just means that both sides of the argument can claim to be correct.

There’s a few of their gravy stained Noreen shirts on a few Chorley lasses.
27 April 2020 at 10:42 pm #186091Whatever, I hope they are still paying their pittance of a rent.
Every penny counts for us at the moment.
Imagine if they didn’t pay and we ended up taking them to court for it.
Look good on TV that.27 April 2020 at 11:55 pm #186093The rent is a % of the matchday income so………
28 April 2020 at 11:11 am #186094Despite being a stones throw away from both Widnes & Warrington, I’ve never heard the word rugby ever get mentioned in Runcorn. And I’ve lived here now for 16 years. It’s mostly Liverpool followed by Everton, then a tiny minute of Utd fans, which is followed by an even smaller group of both Runcorn Linnets & Runcorn Town fans. Then me (but there used to be 2 other blokes I saw wearing latics shirts during the premier league years)!

29 April 2020 at 3:19 pm #186100A long time since I played at Runcorn town, more recently I watched a women’s match there, a feed back, but do they still have women’s football there as well as men’s?
30 April 2020 at 12:05 am #186101The rent is a % of the matchday income so………One of the upsides of being fat gravy-stained cuckoo lodgers with no assets is that 100% of the upkeep of the stadium that nobody can use for God knows how long is the responsibility of the landlord.
Hope those Royal boys have deep pockets….
