The latest rumour is that the Scott McDonald move is back on. Mowbray, when asked if McDonald would be moving to Wigan answered ‘ Watch this space’.
As it seems increasingly likely that the lad from Mallorca will be signing, are we going to get to the end of the season with four strikers?
I doubt it, and as the saying goes, something’s got to give….
22 January 2010 at 8:50 pm #19234Whilst he has a prolific goalscoring record he’s only 5’8″ and whilst Artiz is 6′ 0″ if what I read is right he’s 11stone 9lbs, with no premiership experience it could take them a while to settle in. Although we would have 4 strikers, they would all be light weights, I think the club could do with at least one striker with prem experience who is a bit meatier and not easily pushed off the ball, e.g. Jason Roberts or James Beattie.
22 January 2010 at 9:13 pm #19235artiz agent claims wigan have made no contact about him ,i dont believe anything untill i see the player turning out in a shirt for us, but i have a feeling mcdonald could be our main target .

I’d have Beattie or Roberts – but think there’s little chance we’ll have either.
McDonald is a proven goalscorer in the SPL, but he is tiny.
It’s starting to make me think that the Scotland loan rumours could be true, or perhaps it’s a safety net in case there’s a last minute bid for Rodallega that can’t be resisted.

and jermain defoe is a giant22 January 2010 at 11:23 pm #19253As you are correctly insinuating, Defoe is also small, and so is Michael Owen. The question is why buy another small striker when we generally play one up front as a target-man? Or, if we go to 4-4-2, we’d end up with two dwarfs up front.
The SPL is a pub league, where you can look a world beater with an ounce of pace or guile. My point is, if he was a great finisher but had a bit of size about him, I’d be delighted with him joining us. Unfortunately, a player like that is Kris Boyd and he isn’t interested in Wigan.
23 January 2010 at 1:56 am #19270Could happen, Celtic closing in on Morten Rasmussen a Danish striker.
23 January 2010 at 2:04 am #19271I watched Arsenal score 4 past Noblot the other night and there was nobody above 5 foot five playing out of the back four.
From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!23 January 2010 at 2:11 am #19272Sky Sports say we’re tracking Welbeck off United along with Preston.
23 January 2010 at 2:31 am #19274I watched Arsenal score 4 past Noblot the other night and there was nobody above 5 foot five playing out of the back four.Maybe so, but they are Arsenal not Wigan.
Saying that, Martinez knows better than me, because that’s why he does what he does, and I don’t. We’re trying to play passing football, so perhaps it could work without a big bloke as a target man to hold the ball up.
At this stage however, I can’t see what McDonald would offer that Rodallega can’t.
23 January 2010 at 2:37 am #19276The argument was about size of player, not who they played for.

………it’s always about how many we put in the net. End of
…………………(Season).
Then count.
23 January 2010 at 3:19 am #19287Absolutely Micky, but…
The whole point of my original post was, would we keep all four strikers – if we got the two we are linked with.
Scott McDonald is not a million miles away from what we already have with Hugo Rodallega, so what does he offer?
Are there a lot of people on here with height issues?

standish, you say the spl is a pub league, what makes you think boyd will be good enough and mcdonald wont be,bob as already said that rodney is more dangerous out wide and until bob as built the team hes trying to we dont really what hes got instore, e.g i know he played different position but hand on heart when McCulloch played under rioch can you honestly say he would have turned out to be the player he was under jewell
