Can anybody out there defend him to me? I know it’s tough because Roberto was and will always be a club legend as a player and as a man. This makes things twice a hard, any other manager would have got the bullet by now.
I started having my doubts after the Birmingham game last season (which we dominated) and then folded like a pack of cards. People used to criticise Paul Jewell for having no plan ‘B’ in my opinion the current manager doesn’t have a plan ‘A’.
I wanted it to work, but surely something has to change or this club (if it isn’t already) will become a laughing stock.
15 August 2010 at 11:50 pm #42744My take on it has always been that the players have no respect for him and therefore only want to play when it suits them (Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal at home last year, for example).
I think what it needs is Whelan to go in the dressing room and back him like he did with Jewell when players were acting up. Not sure it will happen though.
Also, I am equally sure that Whelan won’t sack him. Not just yet, anyway.
16 August 2010 at 12:13 am #42748That’s a view a lot of fans have, they only ‘turn up’ when they are in the shop window so really we’ll probably beat Chelsea 3-0 on Saturday. What’s all the fuss about? :)
16 August 2010 at 12:20 am #42750If we have no points after the City game he will go for sure ! Push or jump I dont know but he will go !

Not sure I agree with Whelan not sacking him. I dont think that even ‘Big Dave’ expected things to be quite so bad with ‘Bob’ in charge. Once he realises that we might actually get relegated and the £££ notes may be disappearing then he will act.
16 August 2010 at 2:26 pm #42832Was talking about the same thing last night Griff, Whelan going into the dressing room (Wrexham in LDV wasn’t it?). Not sure it would work now with this lot, too many of them (maybe not all) would just be happy to take the money regardless of whether they want to play for Bobby or not.
As for N’Zogbia, if he did walk out of training, thats total disrespect to manager & staff, players and us fans, but unfortunately we’re not in a financial position to tell him to disappear, rot without playing any games, until his contract is up and then let him see who wants a player who hasn’t played a game for ages.

And on Sky Sports News, the 7 year old who was in all the papers (also a Blackpool fan) is on now
16 August 2010 at 6:25 pm #42906We allowed Blackpool too much space and we thought having the ball would be enough to win a football game and that’s what cost us
Wigan manager Roberto Martinez
16 August 2010 at 9:15 pm #42920who do yer get to replace him tho? no names spring to mind,
16 August 2010 at 10:48 pm #42941Curbishley. Has to be. Perfect for a club of our size and is extremely experienced and proven. We just need people who will instil confidence. Roberto is indeed a legend and a smashing chap but lets be honest, A trained chimp could realise that when something goes constantly wrong, then change it.
17 August 2010 at 12:51 pm #42991I’m a fully paid up member of the darkside but I don’t think you can really talk about replacing the manager for a good few games yet.
As much as I fear its syptomatic of what would happen if Bobby stays, I’m hoping against hope that Saturday’s result & performance was one of those one off freak results that you get early on in the season. I’m also hoping that all those on the “light” side have been right all along & Bobby does know what he’s doing & its all gonna come good very soon – i thik it was Bobby Gould on TalkSport on Saturday morning who said “Ignore the results & performances in the first 5 games coz the majority of them will be freak results. Take stock of the next 5 & then you’ll be able to tell how a team will do”
10 games in, if latics continue as they did on Saturday, won’t be too late to turn things round as Bruce managed it & he had a far worse set of players to do it with & i think managed correctly this team could do really wellMy take on it has always been that the players have no respect for him and therefore only want to play when it suits them (Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal at home last year, for example). You could also look at it & say that after having to deal with him every day in training & on match days that its not a case of having no respect for him coz he was only a lower level league player but a case of realising that he doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing – and maybe that’s what causing the lack of respect

True, but none of those players are really “been there, seen it, done it” types themselves, are they. I also suspect the lack of respect was there even before they had given him a chance to prove that he didn’t know what he was talking about :)
17 August 2010 at 1:11 pm #42995To be honest Griff, after having seen the way the likes of Paul Scharner were with Chris Hutchings (i.e. telling him to f off when being given on pitch instructions) it was one of my fears in appointing Bobby in the first place that some of our more petulant players would have a “Who the F are you?” attitude
i think it has been there from the start but I don’t think Bobby has helped his cause either in ways he has handled outbursts of dissent such as those that were coming at regular intervals from Paul Scharner. It also looks pretty weak if a player gives an interview stating that he wants to play in midfield or else he’s off & the very next game you play him there.
I’m sure we’ve all worked with bosses in the past who have let their staff walk all over them & its a recipe for disaster.
Not being in on what happens at training my comments can only be speculation about what happens there, but if the fans are thinking “What the hell is he doing with that substitution?” or “Why doesn’t he change his formation/system to turn things round?” you can bet your @r$e that the players are thinking it as well. The longer it goes on & the longer the manager continues to repeat the same mistakes the worse that attitude will get. Again, I’m sure we’ve all worked with bosses who we’ve thought haven’t got a clue what they’re doing & the result of that is that people start to ignore what they’re being asked to do -
