We won – be happy !!!:cheer: :cheer:
31 March 2013 at 3:13 am #106813Scruffy win indeed how many on here would have settled for this earlier in the season
31 March 2013 at 3:16 am #106815But the performance is important. We want the team to play well to give us the best chance of staying in the league and reaching the Cup Final.
The problem today was in midfield – there wasn’t any. They couldn’t compete with the Norwich players. The problem arose at half-time against Newcastle too. Wigan only got back into that game when McArthur came on for McManaman.
The defence didn’t play well today – but there was precious little protection in front of them. Gomez and McManaman contributed very little. Once again, it was after McArthur came on – replacing McManaman and allowing Gomez to go further forward – that Wigan took control.
Martinez made the changes just in time in both games – and Wigan gained the vital six points. I’d like to see McArthur back next week, and perhaps Di Santo too. Al Habsi is reported to have been Man of the Match in Australia v Oman. At least Martinez has real choices now.

Just chill out we won
31 March 2013 at 3:58 am #106823Alcaraz was my man of the match, his slide tackle in the box in the second half was risky, but perfect timing made it a brilliant tackle.
He has certainley made a difference along with Scharner at the back.Man of match by a long way I’d say

Correct a much missed player in the early season

I’d find it hard to disagree but Kone pushed him close.
I agree with most of what bigroy said earlier. The turning point of today’s game was when McArthur replaced McManaman.

We needed to bring McArthur on as we were losing the midfield.
31 March 2013 at 4:02 pm #106864The game followed the international break. Players had extra games and long journeys behind them. That may have persuaded Martinez to play McManaman and Gomez instead of McArthur and Di Santo.
They’ve got a week to prepare for the QPR game. I expect McArthur to return in midfield and wouldn’t be surprised if Di Santo comes back too. He will probably stick with Robles as long as Wigan are winning, but I do expect to see Al Habsi again before the end of the season.
Players will be playing for their places at Wembley too. I expect Martinez to repeat that every member of the squad will have an important role to play in the remaining part of the season.
The Manchester City game poses a problem. Win or lose at Wembley, Wigan will quickly have to get into the right frame of mind. He may play a strong team at Wembley and a weaker one at Manchester City. If he thinks that there is the propect of winning points against Manchester City, he may even decide to rotate players for the Wembley and Manchester City games.
31 March 2013 at 4:38 pm #106866How does Bassenjour keep getting a game, he is frightened to death of tackling, runs around in circles and is by miles the worst player we have. I was chuffed when his foul throws got pulled up as they are embarrassing. Gomez does himself no favours with his constant diving either but when he knocks a ball threw like he did yesterday he can be forgiven.
Alcaraz and Kone were both good today and the keeper looked solid when he had to come and collect which makes a refreshing change. Kone has started to look like a striker now.
We got 3 points yesterday against a team I would say is the worst we have played all season but we didn’t play well and we won…Hoe many times do we play well and get nothing!!!
McManaman I thought was ok yesterday and no worse than anyone else. If he were to get dropped and Bassenjour keep his place I would be annoyed as McManaman offers so much more.

Jean did welll yesterday he’s a good outlet and fills in at left back when we are defening he did ok
31 March 2013 at 5:43 pm #106870Beausejour has good control and plays the short passing game that Martinez requires. He and Boyce play as the wing backs required by Martinez. As Simmpool says, he’s defensively aware and covers back well – a big part of the 3-4-3 formation.
After McArthur came on, for the last 20 minutes of the game Wigan took control of the game. Beausejour got to the bye line several times – through neat passing movements rather than dribbling – to put in dangerous crosses.
He keeps his place because he does exactly what Martinez asks of him.
Wigan should have tested the Norwich defence much more than they did. Martinez could have made the changes much earlier. Waiting until the last 20 minutes was enough yesterday – but there are much better teams than Norwich.

Nobody was particularly bad today, but equally no-one was particularly good.It happens. We won. Celebrate and move on.
Agree. Its about results at this point, not performances! I’m amazed at some of the criticism, some of which is from people who have slaughtered me for doing similar in the past…when we actually LOST the game!
Are some of our fans getting a bit too cocky? We’ve won a few games on the trot, but we aren’t there yet. Take any points we get with pleasure, rather than picking the players apart. Oh, and for what its worth, Alcaraz?….
…best player we’ve had in defence since De Zeeuw. The way he made last ditch tackles and carried the ball forward…..immense.
31 March 2013 at 10:09 pm #106903Jean did welll yesterday he’s a good outlet and fills in at left back when we are defening he did okBut he didn’t and no he doesn’t. He get’s the ball in every attack and rather than go with the momentum of the ball he goes to the touch line and traps it with his studs. What is the point of trying to play fluent football when it goes to the attacking outlet then stops.

Just out of interest who would you play instead of jean. I think his runs are quality and allow maloney to come inside where he does his best work because we still have the width
