At the risk of sounding like Bobby, yesterday really was one of those games where the opposition going down to 10 men works against you – up to that point I thought that it was an open game with Latics looking slightly the better side & the only worry was when that Townsend ran at the defence.
When Zamora got sent off QPR just packed everybody back into the last 30 yards of the pitch whenever Latics got the ball & when a team does that Bobby’s system & style of play can start to look laboured coz you can have all the possession in the world but when there’s little or no space for people to run in to then it winds up being constant sideways passing, shots from distance, midfielders getting frustrated & giving the ball away as they look to thread through narrow gaps.
It’s up to the manager to then try & alter things but IMHO I think the change in system came a bit late & the player who got replaced (Beausejour) was possibly the only player who seemed to be finding any sort of space

At least the QPR fans took the responsibility off our fans by doing the booing for us !

One of our esteemed group texted me during the game to say Gomez must have thought he was playing at home with all the abuse he was getting.

One of his less productive games yesterday, but he was by no means on his own in that regard.
I think in the 20 minutes of the game I saw he was hit with 2 or 3 absolutely shocking tackles and that doesn’t include the Zamora one.
True – I thought the Remy tackle on him was a shocker.
Very lucky to just get a yellow.

Not that them going down to 9 would’ve helped us in any way.. would’ve probably worked against us ;)

I thought it was strange in that he replaced both wide men in Beausejour* and McManaman when the best way to try and overcome that type of defending is to get round the back by taking players on down the wings, getting to the by-line and putting the crosses in.

* waits for the inevitable and predictable flack

I am always undecided with Gomez, one minute you wonder could he get into a championship team, then he turns out an absolute blinder of a performance. The whole team were missing yesterday and singling out Gomez is wrong, though I do concede he shouldn’t have stayed on as long as he did, I thought he seemed very twitchy after the red card and the following challenges/constant jeers.

Martinez teaches them to play with patience. They waited patiently for an opportunity, but that wasn’t enough yesterday. They had to be more adventurous to create chances.

QPR going down to 10 men didn’t necessarily put Wigan at a disadvantage. It posed a different problem, but Wigan were unable to come up with a solution.

Kone didn’t play badly – he just had no room to play. A different approach was needed. Wigan could have given them more space when they were in possession, not tackling them until they crossed the half way line.

This was an opportunity for McManaman to take defenders on, and he did have some success in the first half. McArthur’s earlier arrival would have given scope for Gomez to play further forward or for Di Santo to come on. Martinez does seem reluctant to make an early change.

Wigan’s back three should have been able to control QPR’s limited attacks. But Figueroa took part in the free kick ploy, and there was no-one in his place as cover. That’s an elementary lesson to learn.

However, they didn’t collapse after the goal. They persevered and got the equaliser. That is the spirit that they will need if they are to escape from this difficult situation.

Gomez has more creative vision than any of our other players. Surely you’ve not forgotten his through ball for Kone v Norwich?

Forgotten it? They never saw it in the first place.

As for yesterday Tyldesley hits the nail on the head. Totally agree.

Anyway after 3 consecutive wins we were probably due a slip, and after going behind so late that could be a valuble point gained.

What the feck are people moaning at? Would we have taken 1-1 before the game? :P

There is a difference between the result and the performance.

The result was acceptable and gives us a point from the game.

The performance was poor and gives us concern for the next game.

But in spite of the performance we still nicked a point. I’ve blown hot and cold over yesterday’s result but have just about come to the conclusion that it is a good point that we’d have taken before the game.. An opportunity missed maybe and it is gutting to see where 3 points could have placed us, but considering the team will definitely have had one eye on the semi:

– we didn’t lose
– we’ve taken 7 points from 9 and which could easily have only been 2 out of 9
– the red card didn’t help us (maybe if they’d lost a midfielder or defender it might have been different)…remeber, we were playing well before the sending off
– realistically we only really have to worry now about 1 last relegation place and only worry about teams above us (of which at least 4 are still in the mix)
