Can’t fault the effort (of most!) tonight but that just wasn’t good enough in the end. Kirkland coming for the one ball he shouldn’t have and a toothless side going forward sums us up AGAIN.
I think we’ve suffered by giving Figueroa no competition and giving Jason Scotland 40 seconds of normal time is a joke. I’m finding it very hard to support the manager when he makes ridiculous decisions on an alarmingly more regular basis.
17 March 2010 at 1:27 am #26686correct mate problem is we signed 2 many below average players in the summer we seem to huff n puff all night n dont create owt at front of goal im sorry but martinez should never of been appointed no experiance at all n to be honest the team look like a rable im so disapointed in dave whelan he let below average performances go on n on all season martinez should of been sackt after the spurs hammering
17 March 2010 at 1:35 am #26689Thought we were unlucky tonight, an own goal and a bad deflection. I suppose it is the luck of a side with zero confidence.
There were too many stray balls played tonight and the players looked a bit tired. After a goal down I thought that would be it but we got a goal back and looked ok after that. Can’t remember when we last came from a goal down. I noticed we looked a bit unorganized at times and wanted to run with the ball too often instead of finding some space.
Thought Moreno had his best game for is and was unlucky with his shot in the second – he is getting better with each game.
A side with plenty of skill but with zero confidence….just hope we can get something from the Burnley game.
17 March 2010 at 1:42 am #26690Couldn’t agree more. 10 years of team building destroyed in 1 season, by an incompetent, stubborn, man. There are better managers in the Wigan Amateur League. Whelan must bear some of the blame. He appointed him, and should have admited he had made a wrong call, as he did when he appointed Hutchins, and sacked him at Christmas. I have never been as dissapointed after watching League football for over 50 years.
17 March 2010 at 1:46 am #26691this season as been as funny as billy smarts circus, coco the clown manager, and too many donkeys on the field ,oh and nice to see billy smart back from barbados sat in the stands.
17 March 2010 at 2:21 am #26695I can’t make any excuses for tonights performance.
Villa were a desperatly poor team who sum up the awful standards in the Premiership (outside of the top three).
I don’t mind losing to a decent team, neither do I mind losing if we create chances or are simply unlucky/come up against a good defense.
For 45 minutes we didn’t create a single clear cut chance, we looked like a poor Championship team who were well out of their depth.
If we stay up this season I’ll be embarrassed such a shambolic, gutless team survived, but greatful we’ve been given a second chance.

If that’s your argument then why didn’t Whelan sack Jewel in his first ever season or in our second prem season when we lost 9 games on the trot?
And as for 10 years of team building – hah! Apart perhaps from a decent pre season summer under Hutchings and maybe 2 half seasons under Bruce we’ve done no team building in he last 5 years…more the opposite…thanks to an “incompetent, stubborn, man” called Dave Whelan.
I’m not saying Martinez hasn’t got it wrong…I said in pre season that I was concerned about his appointment. I think he has blindly followed his principles and part of that is down to the fact that he hasn’t got anyone of note or experience to challenge him.
He’s also been over ambitious by trying to play a progressive formation and style with players who aren’t yet capable, but without any plan B…again cos he has nobody to provide any challenge or different, experienced thinking.17 March 2010 at 2:48 am #26701Several times tonight I saw Martinez gesticulating to his players el Benitez style and on each occasion not one single Wigan player was taking a blind bit of notice ! Not even looking at him ! I came to the conclusion in the end that he must have been doing it to keep warm !!

Are you taking the pi**?
Villa were probably the BEST TEAM to visit the DW, this season. In James Milner, they probably had the BEST PLAYER to visit the DW, this season.
They have quality throughout. A very, very good side.
Actually, we didn’t play badly. We were just beaten by a better side, which any person worth their salt should just take on the chin. I don’t mind losing to a better side, when the players have tried, which they did.
I think a fair few of our fans really need a reality check. Villa are one of the top teams, and they edged it 2-1. Hardly a debacle.
