A sometime-poster on this forum* has suggested a topic for my 5-4-Friday. He reckons a good couple of topics for 54Fwould be 5 best reasons for a return to terracing and, conversely, 5 best reasons for all-seater stadia.
I happen to agree with him but, at this moment in time, I don’t have 5 discussable** points for each subject.
So, and I know that there is already another thread on a related theme elsewhere, I thought I would canvass opinion on here. I am not looking for 5 reasons for standing and 5 for sitting from each of you, but any thoughts you have will help my research.
I am not talking about legal and safety pros and cons, necessarily – I am looking for things that you personally like/dislike/prefer about sitting/standing at football.Anyway, let’s see how far we go before it descends into petty squabbling and personal insults. I hate it when that happens
*he doesn’t post much now because I have probably driven him away with my superior intelligence – he’s from Leigh, though he keeps denying it.
**I am aware that isn’t a real word
10 February 2014 at 5:36 pm #127113Best reason for standing terraces – you can stand with your mates.
Best reason for seats – you can sit down.
10 February 2014 at 6:45 pm #127116Five reasons for standing:
1. Less chance of the cold, hard seats inducing piles2. Someone will have temporary employment removing all those plastic seats (possible special needs/ex-criminal reintroduction into society / Marlon King?)
3. The club will earn enough in recycled plastic to settle Grant Holt’s tab at Sharpy’s
4. If you look like Justin Bieber/member of One Direction and watch anything featuring Danny Dyer, you can congregate with your own kind and ‘intimidate’ the opposition fans without fear of reproach from stewards
5. Reduced risk of sitting on one’s own testicle (it hasn’t happened yet, but it’s only a matter of time – especially in warmer weather)
Five reasons for seating:
1. The band called the ‘The Empty Seats’ will have to seriously rethink their name2. Standing behind me must be like standing behind the Honey Monster, but with a much bigger head
3. I hate standing. I even sit when p1ssing if I can get away with it these days
4. If I stood, I wouldn’t be able to moan about having to stand at least twice per half to allow the two weak-bladdered morons on my row to go to the bog/bar/leave early, thus giving me nothing to talk about to the woman I sit next to
5. I can balance a pie between my knees and have full use of both hands to eat it

Can’t you sit down with your mates?

That’s the next two weeks 54F sorted then, thanks!
11 February 2014 at 1:40 am #127127I thought that Saturday was a good example of how standing and sitting can be accommodated.
The middle sections of the away end were all seated. The standers made their way to both sides and stood to their heart’s content.
There were signs everywhere stating this is an all seater stadium and fans must be seated for the duration of the game, but the stewards to their credit let the arrangement go and everyone was happy. :)
I suppose this will only work if it is unreserved seating or the stewards don’t insist that you sit in your allocated seat.
From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!11 February 2014 at 2:54 am #127131Best thing about seating you don’t get stretchered off with ankle ligament damage coz you get pushed off the terrace as happened to me v Blackpool F A Cup at Springy
Best thing about standing you aint up and down like a bloody yo-yo coz him next to you spends most of the game buying food or emptying his bladder coz he has quaffed mucho alcohol pre match ;) ;)
11 February 2014 at 1:16 pm #127151Best thing about seating you don’t get stretchered off with ankle ligament damage coz you get pushed off the terrace as happened to me v Blackpool F A Cup at SpringyI feel your pain – although for me it was celebrating Paul Rogers equaliser at home to Gillingham in the 98/99 season. I also then got dropped by the St John’s guys who were carrying the wheely chair thing down the terracing (where the St Andrew’s Stand met the Town End) when I celebrated Simon Haworth putting us 2-1 up shortly after.
On (of the many) plus points for terracing is not scraping all the skin off your shin on the seat in front whilst celebrating a goal
