It seems so easy when you know the answers.
I’d be annoyed if I was Sheringham or Solksjaer, both top quality goalscorers only to be beaten by the number one.

8 December 2010 at 10:36 pm #52845It really is an insult to 95% of Premier League players that he is one of the elite (?) 26 on this list.
He must be the only Premier League player with a surname beginning with X I presume?

Could you not put in Xavi Alonso just to get rid of that mon
8 December 2010 at 10:54 pm #52850No because then we’d put Eric Cantona for E.
9 December 2010 at 2:15 am #52875Abel Xavier should have been exempted purely on the grounds of being shyteXavier was the second one I got as I am unaware of any Premier League players called X-ray or Xylophone.
First attempt, I got 22 from 26, with one of those missing ones being O. The Mrs asked what I was doing, so I told her, and said I couldn’t think of O. She shrugged, said ‘Michael Owen?’ and walked out of the room. I’m attempting her ‘What’s On TV’ crossword later in the week -cos that’ll pish her off if I get them all right.

As it is highly unlikely I will ever get round to finishing/publishing that book, here is my blonde moment.

Gillingham v Shrewsbury Town, League Two Play-off FinalIt was a nice day today and I was playing with Alex in the garden. I had him repeatedly running across the patio and down the garden path to the front gate instructing him to count to fifty before sprinting back to the patio. Clearly, this provided valuable physical and mental exercise for him.
It also afforded me the opportunity to keep nipping indoors to check on the Gillingham versus Shrewsbury Town play-off final being played at Wembley. I only turned the game on towards the end and, unaware of the time the game started, I couldn’t tell from the on-screen clock how long was left. It was clear that they were playing some kind of extra time because all the players had their socks rolled down and were expending very little energy.
The clock indicated that eight minutes had elapsed and there was a small “ST” alongside it. I know that in the past some play-off games operated under the “Golden Goal” principle whereby the first goal scored in extra time resulted in the immediate end of the game and victory for the scoring team. Some competitions adopted the “Silver Goal” rule whereby the first goal scored in the first half of extra time became the winning goal if the opposition did not equalize before the fifteen minutes was up. I concluded that this must be the rule under which the game was being played and that “ST” must stand for “Silver Time”.
H came in and caught me gawping at the screen. “I thought you were supposed to be playing with Alex not watching the bloody football?” she demanded.
In a hastily arranged defence, I explained that this was an exceptional and exciting situation and pointed out the “Silver Time” indicator on the screen to back up my case.
“Or”, she said, “ST could stand for Shrewsbury Town and it is neither exceptional nor exciting”.
She had a point. There was a tell-tale “GIL” near the clock too that most likely stood for Gillingham. For a reasonably intelligent man I can be pretty stupid sometimes. The look she gave me can best be described as withering. I turned off the TV and went back outside to continue Alex’s arithmetic and athletic development.
