This is a free mag that gets handed out round London and one which, until this week, I respected…until they printed a tenuous photo of an empty DW to go alongside an article about the survival of football clubs.
Link to magazine here (see p.12): http://www.myfreesport.co.uk/index.htm
My email to editor here:
You know, I expect it from the rags, even the BBC and Sky – but never thought your magazine (which until this week I had a lot of respect for) would resort to the lazy journalism of picking on “little Wigan’s” crowds and print a misleading and tenuously linked picture of an “empty” DW to support what was a fairly well written article.
What about all the other “bigger” teams that weekend who were 5 figures down on their attendances? What about the fact that Hull only brought 200 to the game? What about the fact that we’ve only been a league club for 30 odd years, but have grown our fan base in the last 10 years from about 2000 to almost 20000 – no other clubs have achieved that scale of growth. And all that despite only being a town with a population of 80000 and in a catchment area dominated by by 6-7 other established premier league clubs?
Why not revel in Leeds knocking out Man U? There was probably even time for you to go to print with a story about Reading knocking out Liverpool. Oh, but I forgot, you probably all support the big 4, even though you’re not from those towns and never actually go to games, or you’re fans of clubs with big but reduced followings (Newcastle, etc) but are embarrassed to look at your own back yard.
To all the lazy football journos who think low crowds = Wigan…play another record will you?

Despite the photo, there’s nothing in the article about our crowds or mention of Wigan Athletic. If I was a journalist looking for a photo to demonstrate how attendances are falling, thats the very photo I would choose. Putting one in of say anfield with a half empty stand wouldn’t be as hard hitting.Let um ger on we it. I really hope they end up slating us for the worst support at an FA cup final. ;)
From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!16 January 2010 at 2:09 pm #18479Just to add here that Hull brought more like 1000 than 200. Did you attend the game?
We have got poor crowds and should be written about but do we really care?

From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!16 January 2010 at 10:11 pm #18500Hull had a hell of a lot more than 346 fans there fatty. I was at the game and witnessed it first hand. Fulham were recorded as having 300 plus earlier in the season when they brought more like 70, Hull did bring around the 1000 mark. If you want to quote the program I can also confirm there are other mistakes in this section.
We have the worst support in the premiership for atmospher and numbers, but it sure beats a loud 2,000 in Division 4.
