It would appear that something is in the offing regarding changes to our squad over the next few days.
The Kieron Westwood story is rearing its head again, which may suggest we are not confident the Ali deal is going to come off and let’s be honest the form he is in, he ain’t going to want to stay with us. So are we going to sack off Ali and bring Westwood in to free up a loan option?
Then we’re also being linked with the Hearts left back – Figs was good going forward last night but he was again caught out a couple of times and he’s had a shocker this season for me.
Rumours of Grant Leadbitter signing for us.
I think we are lining up players to get in just as Charles makes his way out.
I am starting to get that sinking feeling just because of the number of games we have left, but we were 10 times better than we were at the Emirates and at least we are creating chances.
It was no coincidence that the extra energy we had in midfield was as a result of young McCarthy coming back in to the side.
I say play him, Moses, Di Santo, Mcarthur, McManaman on Saturday at Notlob just to help get their fitness up to speed ahead of Tuesday.

I’d agree with Al Habsi. He is destined for bigger and better things.
Figueroa is a poor left back. The first job of a full back is to defend. You can be the best attacking full back in the world, but if you can’t defend, you’re a liability to the team, and that’s exactly what Figueroa is. He was caught out of position time and again last night, and the kit man needs to check his studs, because it’s remarkable the number of times he slips at crucial moments.
I’d go with your suggestion for the Bolton game. The cup is expendable.
26 January 2011 at 4:12 pm #56973Yes, I think the cup game couldn’t have come at a better time. It gives us another competitive game to try and bring our injured players back up to speed.
Alcaraz will be able to have another game’s rest and we can give another game to Piscu. I see he’s also in the squad for this afternoon’s reserve game.
I feel really deflated about the season, but despite our really poor scoring record we still have a chance of staying up. We’re not adrift and if we can beat West Brom on Tuesday who knows what kind of lift that may give the players – we could then see our first back to back wins in goodness knows how long.
My head says we are likely to go down but my heart says we still have a chance and if we have 28 points from 26 games going into that run of games against the big boys who knows what can happen we just might pull off the odd unlikely win……..
26 January 2011 at 4:19 pm #56975Hows this for an idea – play Fig left side of midfield in a purely attacking role
Can cross, can shoot, is quick and runs at the opposition like we saw last night. Tell him to forget the defensive duties – try it out at the Bolton game
With a bit of coaching it could work out well – not saying he is the new Bale / but same sort of idea
ooh matron – what am I saying ‘with a bit of coaching’

Fully agree. I’m disappointed, but listen, if it happens, it happens. I’ll not shed tears, and it might be nice to actually see us win a few games for the first time in quite a while.
But as you rightly say, we’re still not adrift, and as for this magical 40 point mark, it’s all relative. I can see quite a few teams not getting past 40 points this year.
26 January 2011 at 4:21 pm #56978Could be worth a go. He does have good pace and I thought that shot he had which was blocked was hit with real venom and was going in the far corner.
One thing he is not however is a decent defender!
26 January 2011 at 6:48 pm #56995However if you watched him at the world cup, Figgy was a cracking central defender…
26 January 2011 at 6:59 pm #56996It would be good to see the younger players getting a crack at Bolton. And then let’s see them in the Prem even if it’s just for experience if we are facing the drop
27 January 2011 at 4:50 pm #57144The Figgy issue is similar to most of our other defenders – they cant defend!
Alcaraz was one of the best defenders at the world cup yet looks average for us.
It was clear last year we need a defensive coach yet there is still no sign of one27 January 2011 at 5:13 pm #57148It was clear last year we need a defensive coach yet there is still no sign of oneJust because you can’t see one doesn’t mean one doesn’t exist :!:
