On Tuesday, when asked if he would consider bringing in experienced players coming towards the end of their careers, Roberto said that part of the club’s philosophy is to bring in young players, develop them as players (assets) and sell them on later for a profit. It’s the only way for a club like us to survive at this level.
As he wasn’t kicked under the table by Jonathan Jackson for saying this, I presume it is accepted policy.
27 May 2011 at 3:08 pm #66764Pity that. Palacios is on the transfer list for 6m, 4m would probably do it. :( :(

And I think that its a perfectly reasonable & acceptable policy for them to have
I do however think that the clubs needs to have some sort of limit or line in the sand when it comes to who or (to be more exact) how many are flogged off.Going purely off newspaper speculation so far (& I know that’s hardly an accurate measure but stories will be started by agents or clubs hoping to spark a sale so it’ll be a good indication if not who the club are looking to sell but which players are trying to force a move) then the club could potentially be looking at saying toodle pip to N’Zogbia, Rodallega, McCarthy & Diame. All this would bring in a pretty penny but all have, if not all season then for part of it, been vital links for Latics & to have to replace them all & hit the ground running next season would be a hell of an ask especially when you also consider that Cleverley & Al Habsi have also gone
At a push i think the club should look to move on 1 or 2 players at the end of each season to keep the club aflot & to bring in new players but to possibly look at having to replace 6 is way too much in my opinion
27 May 2011 at 4:14 pm #66773Let’s be clear, they don’t have to sell anyone, but I suppose the subtext of that is that they are limited in terms of who else they could bring in if they don’t sell.
27 May 2011 at 4:46 pm #66778Couldnt agree more! I think losing 6 players (Al Habsi & Cleverley incuded in that) would rip the spine out of what looks to be a very good young team and we would struggle to pick up that many quality players in the summer who could pick up where we left off so to speak.
27 May 2011 at 4:48 pm #66779Let’s be clear, they don’t have to sell anyone,Exactly. Apart from Cleverley & Al Habsi every player , as far as I know , is contracted to at least another year.
However it does appear that Boselli will be going so for me we use that to get Ali and take it from there. I heard Bob on TV the other day saying that we need to start next season with an equal or even better squad than we have now. That may mean one of our star players going but if they do it will have to be at a good price.
I don’t think McCarthy will be going just yet. He seems to pretty level headed or have good advisors , didn’t he turn down LFC for us , so as promising as he obviously is I’m sure he/they will know he stills needs a few more years developing before his big move.
28 May 2011 at 3:40 pm #66823am i right in thinking wilson didn’t want to leave in 1st place.defo welcome him bak
30 May 2011 at 3:17 am #66919He probably didn’t want to leave as it was his first real taste of the ‘big time’, and his mate Figueroa, and mentor Bruce were here.
Now he’s done a couple of years in the bright light of London, and the superior training facilities at Spurs, I can’t see him being that eager to move back up to Wigan.
30 May 2011 at 2:17 pm #66934I don’t think Cleverly looks Utd first team class. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him back next season, possibly permanently.
