Which is the best.
My liite ‘un loves trains and I was wondering which were the best ones these days.
I remember being taken on the Settle/Carlisle a few times and there are ones from Llangollen.
Any suggestions

3 November 2010 at 1:30 pm #50118Full scale railways…
http://www.embsayboltonabbeyrailway.org.uk/Small scale railways…Worden Park in Leyland has a great small scale set up that offer free rides ( financial contribution optional ) with 2 pretty big tracks. Some days they are model diesel and other days model steam trains. Preston docks also has a small gauge steam railway with a museum as well ! http://www.prestondocks.co.uk/ribble_steam.html
3 November 2010 at 11:28 pm #50147There used to be one in Haigh Hall grounds, not sure if its still there.
I used to love the one at Worden Park when I was a kid.
Steamtown at Carnforth used to be great for steam enthusiasts, but I think it closed down a while back4 November 2010 at 12:17 am #50148http://east-lancs-rly.co.uk/ in Bury run steam trains every weekend not to far away.

Beware, it’s a bit of a rip-off. Not much to see for plenty cost.

9 November 2010 at 2:05 am #50503Back in the days of steam, train spotting was an honourable pastime, probably more so in Wigan because of its strong association with the railways. However, the appeal was diminished when the diesels and electrics came along, after which it attained its nerdy tag.
Running and maintaining steam engines is a very expensive business. To achieve this and allow the preserved lines to continue, the East Lancashire Railway for example, requires the services of numerous unpaid volunteers to maintain the locomotives, track and infrastructure. Whilst it may seem a rip-off, ’Thomas the Tank Engine’ weekends provide an essential source of revenue for these organisations in their struggle to stay afloat. The alternative is that you and your kids never get to see a fully working steam engine in all its impressive glory and that would be a shame.
