Said something like
‘They (Chelsea) are comfortable and used to playing against one up front, so I changed it and played two up front and had a go’
We have seen our own improved performances of late – attacking with pace etc, in this respect our manager seems to have learned and improved
However – has he learned and improved that much that he can be alittle more flexible ala Bruce
15 November 2010 at 2:06 pm #51086It kind of helps when their 2 centre backs, including the captain and fat frank are missing.
This is the same Cheslea that got beat by Liverpool the week before, so maybe there are deeper problems.
15 November 2010 at 2:22 pm #51088I agree with Bruce to a certain extent.
If you go in carefree & gung ho at the top club’s you are liable to get cut to ribbons but far too often the opposition lines up against these teams in an effort to contain them & treat them with far too much respect
The best results are often got against them by pressurising them, not letting them settle & playing without any fear

Got to agree! Would love to see us go at Man Utd with 2 up front and Nzog and Victor pushing them wings constantly. As they say though leave it to the manager and I am sure he will do what’s best. No crushing and I am happy but I am genuinely optimistic going into this game!

Ferguson said as much in the paper this morning about Villa’s approach to their game last Saturday. He said if you let young lads just have a go they won’t let you down.
Besides, we are nowhere near good enough defensively to simply contain a team like United for 90 minutes
18 November 2010 at 12:08 pm #51223For me its about striking the right balance
If you go gung ho at a club like United then they’ll tear you apart. If you attempt to sit deep & contain them then (more often than not) they’ll tear you apart.
For me you’ve got to constantly pressure them when they’re in possession & not let them settle or retain possession for too long & attack on the counter attack at pace (without committing too many men forward) when you do have the ball.
Personally I’d go with Moses & N’Zogbia down either flank on Saturday with Di Santo playing in the hole (where he looked good against Sunderland) in the absence of Cleverley just to give us a more attacking option than Gomez so when we do get a chance there’s likely to be more than 1 player around to have a pop at it
18 November 2010 at 12:19 pm #51225I remember our first season, Jewell through caution to the wind and changed to us playing 4-3-3 at Old Trafford. I think it was more a case of him actually not thinking we had a chance anyway, so ‘sod it’ kind of thing.
It was bold, but it was like men against boys.
I’m actually looking forward to our side facing them at this time. They’ve had a sticky patch, whilst we have definitely picked up and ‘settled down’ a bit. It would be interesting if we could take the lead, as long as we don’t then try and defend it. Do that and it will end up about 4-1.
I just hope he starts with the same team that finished against West Brom, but start with Rodallega. (Bit of a blow Cleverley will be missing, but then again it opens up the need even more for Moses, to add flair)
How good was Gohouri at left back? I’m also a big fan of Steve Caldwell as well, considering he came here for nothing. I prefer him to Gary. Better player, in my opinion. I find it frustrating that Gary Caldwell is captain, when he is missing more games than he plays.18 November 2010 at 12:54 pm #51230Personally I’d go with Moses & N’Zogbia down either flank on Saturday with Di Santo playing in the hole (where he looked good against Sunderland) in the absence of Cleverley just to give us a more attacking option than Gomez so when we do get a chance there’s likely to be more than 1 player around to have a pop at it
Can’t disgree with any of that. Can’t see Di Santo being fazed by playing against them. Gomez might just be a bit easy for them to overpower.18 November 2010 at 2:56 pm #51231Personally I’d go with Moses & N’Zogbia down either flank on Saturday with Di Santo playing in the hole (where he looked good against Sunderland) in the absence of Cleverley just to give us a more attacking option than Gomez so when we do get a chance there’s likely to be more than 1 player around to have a pop at it

I also agree with that. Di Santo suited that role.
