Now thats ambition, Take a look Whelan,No links to 1m pound second rate players
Stoke City chairman Peter Coates has revealed the club are making enquiries about the availability of Real Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.
The former Manchester United man hopes to be a part of Holland’s World Cup squad for the finals in South Africa this summer.
The 33-year-old has struggled to hold down a regular place in the starting XI at the Bernabeu and the club are believed to be willing to sanction a move.
Stoke are looking to secure a third successive season in the Premier League and manager Tony Pulis has said he is looking to strengthen his squad during the January transfer window.
Coates admitted he was unsure how likely a deal for the prolific striker would be, but confirmed their interest had been lodged.
He said: “It may be a long shot but we’ve made enquiries and we’ll see what comes from them.
“It depends on him wanting games to make sure he goes to the World Cup. We’re too far away from it to know how realistic the chances are of it happening.”
The Dutchman scored 150 times for United in all competitions during his five seasons at Old Trafford, where he won the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup before an £11million move to the Spanish giants in 2006.
After initial success at Real, his time at the club has been dogged by injuries and he now hopes to impress Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk to take part in what would surely be his last World Cup finals.
Whelan did that with Michael Owen. Not a chance he would come to us then and there’s no chance at all of RVN going to Stoke. I’m as fed up with Whelan as the next person but that’s a cheap shot if ever there was one on here.
If ypu think wasting time chasing targets you’ve no chance of getting is a good way of spending time in the transfer window, then I think you need to get a grip. Stoke havent a cat in hells chance of getting Van Nistelrooy to go there.

But on the off chance he does go there, and that is only a small chance, then it would be a great signing, and if by some miracle he ended up going there, then it wouldnt be time wasted would it, it would be time well spent, You never know unless you ask.
That would be a knee jerk signing of the highest order signing RVN. A player going on 34 with this recent activity to brag abaout:-
“In November 2008, Real Madrid announced that Van Nistelrooy would miss the remainder of the 2008–09 season after exploratory arthroscopic surgery revealed a partially torn meniscus in his right knee, with an expected recovery time of six to nine months following a second operation to repair the damage. Van Nistelrooy travelled to the United States to see specialist Richard Steadman, who had previously operated on the same knee back in 2000. At the time of his injury, he had 10 goals in 12 club appearances for the season.Following the injury, he was de-registered by Real Madrid for the rest of the 2008–09 season, and his shirt number was given to Dani Parejo. In the last preseason game before the start of La Liga, Van Nistelrooy stepped on the pitch for the first time since his injury and played the last fifteen minutes of the game against Rosenborg, substituting Kaka.[when?] Van Nistelrooy came on for Cristiano Ronaldo in the 80th minute against Xerez in his first La Liga match since recovering from his injury. In the 81st minute, he provided the assist for a Benzema goal, following it with his own 88th minute goal. However, during his strike, he picked up a thigh injury. It was revealed by Real Madrid that he would be out from first team action for up to 6 weeks. On October 27 Van Nistelrooy made his second comeback of the season coming on as a substitute for Raul in the 71st minute against Alcorcon in the Copa del Rey”
At least if we signed him he would be a good companion for Kirky in the treatment room.
I had a look at the free transfer list the other day, cant remember the link but theres some cracking players on it, dont know why we aint going for any of them really. Gudjohnsen was on it, why not go for him?
Because he gets paid about three million quid a year, and he wouldn’t consider playing for Wigan.
Very clear, concise and accurate answer but ……………… don’t you sometimes feel it is groundhog day? How many times must this answer be put forward before it registers?

Sure do. As Yogi Berra said ‘It’s like déjà vu all over again’

We should have a “Head Banging” forum.
Then again, we’d probably be inundated with posts about Led Zep and Motorhead and “who was our best ever bassist?” polls.
