I love this quote from the above Stoke link :-
“We got a footballing lesson second half.
Wigan had a manager on the sidelines who looked like he was in control. We had a bloke in a cheap shell suit and a baseball cap hopping and jumping around like a deranged Chimp. Embarrassing.”
30 January 2013 at 11:56 am #101701Great display tonight. Thought we were quite good first half in parts but lacked that cutting edge. Second half we were superb. Not many sides silence the Stoke fans at home when they’re 2 up but I don’t think they could believe it. Their board should be interesting reading tonight.
Espinoza was poor early on but got into the game and was impressive again.
McArthur was immense.
Maloney was his usual busy self.
Beausejour even played well.
Golobart made a few mistakes in his distributuon early but he looked very composed and could really be a star for us.Mike Jones. As shite as usual. I’m not sure Crouch can head a ball if he isn’t holding onto someone. Every time he looked where the defender was and then held onto him. Wanker.
Having only watched the match on Football First, I’d agree with almost of all of that (don’t really do referee bashing).
I have to say that after seeing some of the comments on here, facebook and twitter about the first half perfomance I was expecting to see a lot worse than we actually produced. It was very scrappy from both sides, but we were nowhere near as bad as people were making out. (Argus69 was up and down like bride’s nightdress :))
Second half much better and Espinoza looks like Gomez’s faster, hairier big brother. encouraging that we got forward a bit quicker than we normnally do but still room for improvement.
A good point, must be followed by 3 on Saturday. I can’t bring myself to think that Villa and Newcastle will go down so at this moment I still have us as one of the favourites to go down. 3 points on Saturday might make me change that view.
30 January 2013 at 1:15 pm #101711Like Griff I’m only going off what I saw on Football First but I thought that the 1st half was as bad as I’ve seen Latics play in a long time.
The performance was completely disjointed, players unable to trap a bag of cement, retain possession or find a team mate with a simple pass. The only saving grace was that Stoke were almost as bad
I also thought that the 2 goals were symptomatic of everything that has been wrong with Latics season – Keystone Cops defending for the first (1st rule of a defensive header – get it up high & away, not out a head height back into a crowd of players) whilst yet again Al Habsi pushes a shot straight back out into the danger zone instead of away.
I defended Ali on here a few weeks back but he’s at the point where he’s costing us more points than he’s saving us & has done all season (I read on a BBC web preview of one of our recent games that Ali is top of the tree this season for mistakes that cost his team goals & points). I don’t know the reason/s for this dip in his form but it’s looking a longer term issue than a mere blip. IMO there’s no room for sentimentality in football & as much as he’s saved us in the past he needs to be made aware that his position isn’t guaranteed & to buck his ideas up & if he doesn’t then he should be dropped – any other player in any other position would have been by now IMOAnyway, on to the second half & that was as good as the 1st half was bad. I’m hoping that the first half was just a case of the team settling in to a slightly different system with a couple of players needing to find their feet on their debuts (& both of em were superb in the 2nd half from what I saw.
As someone else has said maybe that 2nd half will act as the spur for them team to push on for the rest of the seasonAs for the ref, I thought he did well in the main. I think the challenge on Espinoza prior to their 2nd goal was a foul – as soft as it would have been at the end of the day, Espinoza had released the ball & the defender came through & trod/stamped on his foot. He’d given a foul in the 1st half when Maloney had been taken out after he’d released the ball & I don’t see the difference.
Other than that he did okay & he didn’t allow himself to be swayed by teh stoke manager, players or supporters when they started to whinge about Latics fouls & some of our men taking a dive
I agree completely about Crouch though – the only way he is capable of winning a header is by putting his hands on the shoulder of his marker & using em as leverage when he jumps. He does it every time & seems to get away with it about 90% of the time. The only time I’ve seen him get picked up on it almost all the time is when he’s played in european club competitions & slightly less so at international level30 January 2013 at 3:49 pm #101730Anonymous

Brilliant… and true.
When Pulis’ orders of “Hoof it up to the big lad” don’t work, he clearly doesn’t like it. The horrible moaning c*** :)
I don’t wanna ramble on. I was there, and James McArthur’s performance was one of the finest midfield showings I have seen from a Wigan player in a very long time. That fella has come on leaps & bounds over the last couple of seasons – he ran it. Even played well in the 1st half when most around him were taking a while to settle in. One goal, one assist.. and could have bagged another but for a good save. That outside of the foot finish was quality.
The whole midfield in the second half were unreal. Espinoza shook off his average first half and showed real class. Always wanted the ball and can clearly get forward and make things happen. That pass for our first goal was world class. He’s the sort of box-to-box midfielder we need… keep that f**king Gomez away from the starting 11.
As always, Maloney looked direct and dangerous. If he was 5 years younger, he’d be 1 of the most sought after players in the league (based on recent form & performances). Always available & willing to take a man on. Has real class and ability – looks like he’s gonna start something off or set something up every time he gets the ball to his feet.
The whole team, pretty much, looked top notch in the second half. Clearly got their act together and played to the best of their ability. Golobart, to me, looks an exciting prospect. Great goal saving block later on. Looked strong & comfortable when he settled in to the game.

Went to the game last night………thought we were dead and buried after their second goal, but we just bossed it after our first goal and could have even sneaked it at the death.
Agree with everything quoted above…especially the Gomez suggestion.
Seeing how we moved and worked the ball around made Sjoke look like Bolton of old….”Hoooof!”……as they constantly lashed it up to Lerkio.If……..If we can put a performance in like the second half on Saturday against the scummerz…….we should have 23 points by 5 0 clock.

My only criticism is, when you attack from wide we need more bodies bursting a testy to get into the box. Time after time you see crosses flying in and 1 man alone in the middle or the wide man having to turn back cause there’s no one to aim for.
If we can sort that then I have a feeling goals will come, and as for Stoke ? I would sooner stick my balls in a vat of brick acid than pay to watch that week in week out.
Oh and finally , , Espinoza ? 1st half to 2nd half performance ?, def needs drug testing.

Tell me about it. Stoke are 100% proof that football is all about results as opposed to entertainment. “Better seen live” is the tagline to their season ticket renewals. May I suggest “better seen whilst pissed and/or stoned and even then you may suffer severe boredom”
30 January 2013 at 5:50 pm #101750Oh and finally , , Espinoza ? 1st half to 2nd half performance ?, def needs drug testing. He was certainly trying to get further forward quicker in that second half. As I said earlier, Gomez’s faster, more adventurous, hairier brother.

That second half performance reminded me of our form towards the end of last season. We really need to follow it up on Saturday and I just hope it isn’t a case of one swallow……………………..

Hence my mood swings. :)

Spot on bing. We need to start Henriquez up front with Franco on Saturday. Since Kone went to Africa we’ve not replaced him with another striker and that has been costing us chances as we’re not getting enough players in the box.
