Even though I’m now more rational today and less of the gibbering wreck I was most of yesterday, one thing I still can’t get my head round is where 5 minutes of stoppage time came from in the 2nd half. And then the Ref gave them 6 minutes anyway!

And chuff-me, but did those minutes last forever or what??

It struck me as extremely strange too. I was starting to get all paranoid about the establishment seeking to get us out of the PL but that doesn’t add up really. Afterall he could easily have given a penalty (though he was right not to) when jones backed into caldwell in the box as he jumped to head the ball and all the stoke fans scream penalty.
        but no way 5 minutes.

5 subs means 2 mins 30 seconds, and the goal means an extra 30 seconds.

So for the extra 2 minutes, i have no idea.

I think they’re supposed to add 30 seconds for each booking as well I think, though I can’t remember if there were any or not.

There is no set amount of time that referees are instructed/supposed to add on for substitutions or cautions
The 30 second thing is a guidance more to clubs as to what they can expect to see added on for certain stoppages
What the referee is supposed to do is stop his watch & then start it again when he is ready for play to resume.

I myself thought 5 minutes seemed excessive but when you look at the substution of N’Zogbia that was made in time added on, that took over a minute & so the ref was spot on in adding the additional minute & 20 seconds on to the 5 minutes

I actually thought Mariner got a few big decisions wrong yesterday – Stoke should have been awarded 2 penalties (the first when Figueroa hacked someone down just inside the area & the second when Alcaraz jumped on to the back of someone – the 3rd claim they had was a good challenge) & Latics should have been awarded one for Pennant’s challenge on N’Zogbia
