Gomez and the rest of the team did more than OK on wednesday. Some better finishing and it could have been 3 or 4 one to us.

City’s midfield is not blessed with players who rush around closing the opposition down. I am quicker than Gareth Barry.

No. You are quicker than Barry Bethel. Marginally.

I’m quicker than Barry Bethel when pulling a Rickshaw with Lisa Riley in it.

Well, they did lose at West Ham, but that isn’t the end of it.

I’m sure that Martinez can motivate them in the League. And I’m sure that the prospect of trips to Swansea and Cardiff is a bigger incentive than a flight to some distant outpost of the former Soviet Union or a trip to Doncaster.

Now we know why Martinez consistently put out weaker teams in the cup competitions. In fact, it wasn’t a full strength team at Everton, but it did turn in a sensational first half performance against an indifferent Everton team.

The cup success has certainly given the fans new heart. But I’m not sure that it has helped the team.

In the league, Martinez has stuck with McManaman and Gomez in the starting eleven, but the team hasn’t been able to reproduce the form that they found in the first half at Everton – with the sole exception of the first half against Newcastle.

McManaman hasn’t lasted a whole league game – and McArthur has come on in every one to try to stabilise the team and try to get something from the game.

Gomez has played reasonably well and can challenge Di Canio for a place.

Alcaraz will be a loss if he is injured – but Martinez has Caldwell and Golobart to choose from. If Boyce drops back into defence, then there will be places for two out of Stam, McManaman, Gomez and Di Canio.

I just hope that they can do enough to keep pace with Villa, then beat them on the final day.

The Cup Final has become a distraction rather than a step to a higher level.
