If Stuart Downing had a right foot as good as his left, he’d be close to being the best player in the world, and he wouldn’t be at Aston Villa, no disrespect. He’d be at Barca.
But he’s all left foot! Isn’t it criminal that such a talented player has NEVER been coached to improve his right foot? It says a lot for the failings of coaching in this country.
What a player he’d be……if he could use his right foot like his left.
We need to start nearer to home and get Figueroa to use his right foot.
If he comes in from the left wing he’s lost if he can’t play the ball with his left foot.
Obviously he will never be the best player in world  but it would make him not so easy to play against.
Fair points. I don’t think we’ll have the problem much longer, though.
Have to say though, left back is the hardest position on the pitch to fill. It’s the one position where you need a really strong player with a natural left foot, and a degree of ability in their right foot as well. Decent left backs are harder to find than any other position.
And when you consider we only really brought him over as a ‘mate’ for Palacios, to keep him company, it’s fair to say we’ve not done too bad out of him. We got lucky really, but all it did was hide the fact that WE SPENT NOTHING (once again) to replace Leighton Baines.
Anything at £5 million or over and we should snatch their hand off.

Are you blaming Bobby for that as well[/quote]
Aw bless! “Bobby”
‘You want to LOVE him…you want to KISS him….you want to BUM him….’
Does his pert bottom in a designer suit give you a blood rush?
Or is it is mannequinesque arms folded, show feck all emotion for 90 minutes, that does it for you?

Don’t get carried away Dave. Downing is a decent player – but he’s not a patch on Adam Johnson even, who is a product of the same academy, but (more or less) two footed.
Once you get to 18 or 19, you’re unlikely to improve someone on their weaker foot as habits are already firmly ingrained by then.
It’s only recently that the UK have taken the Dutch lead, and now get kids to concentrate on their weaker foot at an early age.
The other development is in the promotion of Futsal in this country in attempt to improve ball control, flair, and improvisation. If it’s good enough for the Brazilians and the Spanish, it’s good enough for us.
