when alcarez spat at the wolves player (sorry cant remember who it was) my first thought was you stupid idiot – thats him banned – or words to similar effect. when he was banned, there was no shows of support from anyone connected to wigan – he deserved it. it annoys me when scousers feel so hard done by yet again when one of theirs racially abused another player. they always feel that everyone is against them.

I really am getting fed up with Liverpool fans. And as many of you may know I am a scouser who was brought up “A Red”.

Now, I don’t really like any of the big clubs, but Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd believe they should beat Wigan because of the quality of the players they have. A reasonable point in my opinion.

There is a small group of teams – Newcastle, West Ham, Leeds and now Liverpool – who believe they should beat us because of who they are. That’s delusional.

I remember 40 years ago clapping Red Star Belgrade off at Anfield when they had played a great game to beat Liverpool in a European tie. When Leeds won the League at Anfield one year they went to the Kop and were applauded. It was common practice then to praise and acknowledge a fine display by an opposing goalkeeper. All that has changed, and I think Liverpool has been the loser in this.

That’s not what has happened though is it? Despite Liverpool doing their best to portray that as fact.
From what i can gather Evra has made a complaint that Suarez used a certain phrase towards him during the match which he found racially offensive. Luis Suarez has stated that he did use a particular Spanish phrase (presumably the one Evra has said he made) but that he didn’t mean it offensively because it isn’t an offensive term in Uruguay – he’s then gone on to claim that he only used it because that is what his United colleagues call him (which I doubt as only De Gea & Valencia from the 1st team squad speak Spanish).

The FA have decided on the basis of what both players have stated & after having taken advice from independent bodies that, whatever the intent behind it, that the term is racially offensive, that they can’t be seen to accept the “I didn’t know it was offensive” argument (in law ignorance of the law is no excuse as a defence & it would allow virtually anybody charged with insulting, offensive or abusive language to use the same argument).

That said, the punishment should be the same as it would have been had the ref heard it & deemed it a sending off offence & I’m not sure 8 games would have been the punishment.

What I did find distasteful last night was Martin Tyler’s references to Suarez as being able to enjoy his football/see the funny side of things etc.. less than 24 hours after the FA have found him guilty of using racist & offensive language. An experienced media pundit like him should have shown a bit more neutrality or just not commented on the issue at all

Its probably due to the fact the Suarez admitted saying the word, which was deemed offensive by Evra, so he was charged and found guilty.

The defence the scousers have is that it wasnt meant as an offensive word, as in spanish the word can have other meanings.

      Guilty.

Alas, this kind of appreciation has long gone and I don’t think the modern day attitude of slagging off anything that doesn’t directly benefit the individual or collective individuals is necessarily unique to football. This “I’m alright jack” way of thinking started in the eighties and is now firmly entrenched in society. Grab what you can whenever you can. Football seems to reflect this very well.
