Hi Wigan fans, just came to ask you a few things about Mohamed Diame.
I have been told by my source (He works at the club & has gotten a lot of things right in the past) that Mohamed Diame is coming up to Sunderland tommorow to begin talks, he could possibly be our first signing over the next 72 hours. Apparently his deal with Liverpool has collapsed and we are now the next club in line to gain his services.

Just wondering what you lot think of him, do you rate him? What are his best & worst qualities, and will he do well (If he does) sign for us.

Also, is he an improvement on Lee Cattermole?

Thanks for your time Latics, and good luck and all the best for next season. Once again, I’m hoping you beat the drop. :)

Could have been better than he was is I suppose my initial answer.

He looked quite good before he went off to the African Nations, but all things are relative and that was when we were playing badly, so my granny’s cat could possibly have looked good (and he’s been dead 30+ years). By the time he came back (Momo, not the cat) we had got our new system working and there was no place in it for him.

Technically fairly sound, but don’t expect more than 60 minutes out of him – by then he looks knackered.

Not the heart and soul man that Cattermole is, but far less likely to be sent off for a rash challenge, so better in that sense.

If he’d wanted to stay at Latics I’d have been happy to see him stay, which I suppose tells you all you need to know, but he has got a bit above himself thinking he’s better than he is. Allegedly was going to sign for Liverpool having had coversations with Dalglish. All that changed when Dalglish got the boot.

Sunderland seems a reasonable place for him (and I don’t mean anything more to that than a genuine belief).

From what I’m led to believe some of his suitors are put off by the fact that he has a problem with his ticker.

Wigan were aware of this and always had a defibrillator to hand just in case.

This never appeared to be a problem whilst at Wigan but after all the publicity surrounding Muambe I guess that some clubs may be thinking twice about him.

As I previously said this doesn’t appear to have been an issue and on his day he can be a great player. I still remember the crackers he scored at the Stadium of Light.

As Paul Jewell once said to david O’Leary back in 2005 – I hope you do too!!

Back to Diame, I’d kind of echo what Garswood said but I’ll add that at times he can be unplayable & at times looked head & shoulders above anything else out on the pitch
However he appears to be as lazy as he is talented. If he goes forward in support of an attack don’t expect him to get back into position for at least 5 minutes as he seems to amble back without a care in the world. Really frustrating coz he could be a top player but he just doesn’t seem to have the motivation.
Also, as Garswood has pointed out, his fitness appears to be a problem & in all my time of watching football I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone so visually hit a brick wall, fitness wise, as him.
In the 3 years he’s been at Latics he has always been in & out of the side – started off well in his first season, faded badly & got dropped, didn’t start off too well in his second season, got dropped & then came back with a bang at the back end of the season & this season just gone he was one of our better players (although that wouldn’t have been hard) before Xmas, went to the ACN & never started another game.
So in effect if Sunderland do sign him, you’ll be getting a player who has never been a regular in the whole time that he’s been at Latics

I don’t believe for one minute that United pulled out of a deal last week due to his heart condition (as was reported down here), nor that Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, valencia, Malaga & a few others who he & his agent claims have enquired about him have actually shown any interest in him coz I don’t think he’s anywhere near good enough – Martin O’Neill however may well be able to sort out his lazy streak coz if he can then you will have a decent signing

One other thing, I’ve not been up to Sunderland since our Championship days but I hope your women are better looking than they are down here coz he very publicly stated that he thought they were a bit minging in Wigan :pinch:

NB – Please note that by stating Diame’s views on the good ladies of this town I am by no means saying that I agree with them!! :woohoo:

I must admit, I have never heard of a situation where a club in relegation trouble has left their best player on the bench for the final run in !! :)

Give me a 90 minute, solid (if unspectacular) grafter like McArthur over a 10 minute here, 10 minute there, when he can be bothered type player like Diame

If Diame had McArthur’s application you’d have one hell of a player but then again he’d have never been at Latics if he was.
Reminds me alot in terms of the “bags of talent/low on application” of Simon Haworth

I reckon that Roberto left certain players on the sidelines on purpose. OK there were apparently injuries but it does seem a bit of a coincidence that two of the players that were on their way out seemed to be the only ones picking up training ground knocks or whatever during the run in.

I believe that he had momentum with the side much the same as the final few games last season but this time around the players that got us over the line are the same ones that look likely to start the next campaign.

It’s a bit like having a racing car and once you’ve passed the chequered flag somebody from another team removes a wheel nut or two and then you’re expected to perform as well in the next race before you’ve had chance to find suitable replacement spare parts.

N’Zogbia was a big part of our survival last season and he just up and left (he did alright last season did he not ?)

We missed him at the start of this season and once you start losing a few key games it’s always going to be hard to turn it around – but Roberto managed it with aplomb.

Let’s just hope that we can carry that on into next season with our first game away at Southampton ;)

I’ve always been a Momo fan. His talent should make him be a top, top player, but his fitness levels [which have improved] and his positional play is still, a cause for concern.
He came back from the African Cup of Nations like a lame duck and consequently lost his place in the team and rightly so.

I sit quite close to the dug outs and have often heard Martinez and Jones screaming at Momo to get back or pick up a player.

I liken him to a young Patrick Viera, he has the ability to rob players of the ball with his long gangly legs and can beat players when in tight situations. He his pacey with the ball at his feet and as you Mackems have witnessed first hand, he has a scorcher of a shot in his locker.

I was devastated to hear that he wasn’t signing another contract with us as I feel he will be a top quality player if he gets all his game together. However, I must admit, our team looked a different class without him in, with the two Maccas head and shoulders above him with respect to positional play and keeping the opposition midfield quite.

Overall summary, in my view, you may just get the greatest free signing in Premier league history. It will be down to how he’s managed [doesn’t speak any English] and how much the weaker points in his game are improved.

Good luck to him wherever he ends up, a good footballer, with the potential to be great. Adios Momo!
