He has either
A) confirmed he is not up to playing at this level ever again, or
B) and this is more likely, is getting the excuses in now before Saturday. And playing on bobs sentimentality in getting another season as club captain, the ‘good ol’ war horse’. It’s a shame, but his fitness and pace have caught up with him. And he was far better than me!
I fear the answer is B). His own words in an interview with sky below.

Wigan captain Gary Caldwell is willing to play through the pain barrier to lead the team out in the FA Cup final.
The Latics take on Manchester City at Wembley on Saturday but Caldwell is struggling to be there as he battles the chronic hip injury that has disrupted his season.
“I’ve had to manage a difficult injury,” the 31-year-old Scot told the Daily Record. “The hip I had surgery on three years ago has been playing up for nine months.
“I had a steroid injection last week which has helped it a little bit so hopefully that will help me get through the next few weeks. It looks like I’ll need surgery on it again over the summer.
“I have not trained properly for six months. When I do I have to take an injection and I get two of them to help me through games.
“It’s been hard because I want to contribute, I want to help, but if you are not 100 per cent there’s no point being on the park.
“The gaffer has been great. He said he’ll use me whenever he feels I can contribute and help the team. Hopefully, he feels that way on Saturday.
“I can’t do the hip any more harm in the long term. The damage is done. I will see the surgeon again at the end of the season to discuss the next step.
“It’s all about what kind of mobility I’m going to have with it – and what pain I can take. It’s wear and tear on the joint.
“But I would take an injection to play on Saturday. I’d do it any week if it takes a bit of the pain away and means I’m able to help the team. I’m happy to do that.”10 May 2013 at 2:52 pm #113062Whoever plays will have my full support.
I think it’s time we had a truce on criticising players till at least tomorrow night.
10 May 2013 at 3:30 pm #113064And why is it all about Caldwell anyway? In my opinion he played well for an hour and then made a shocking error. 4 or 5 players made suicidal errors in relation to the 3rd goal. Injuries and fatigue have caught up with us and that was most evident on Tuesday night. I’m sure it lifted spirits when a section of the crowd booed them off the pitch at the end of the game!
It’s all about getting behind the team for the remaining 3 games and let’s try and achieve what many would argue is the impossible!10 May 2013 at 4:03 pm #113067Gary Caldwell ‘gets’ the way Roberto wants to play as much if not more than any other player we have. Okay, he’s prone to the odd Bramblesque balls up and lacks a bit of pace but he’s also capable of nicking a goal or making a killer pass, like the other night. And, most importantly, he’s in blue and white and we should all be behind him.
Scharner’s the one that makes me have kittens when he’s passing it around the back
10 May 2013 at 4:14 pm #113069Bit unfair on Caldwell of the stories I have heard are to be believed. He has to have a number of pain killing injections to make him mobile. He has supposed to have put off a hip operation so that he can be available if needed….if all is true, what a remarkable effort of someone who clearly cares for the club…

10 May 2013 at 4:20 pm #113071dont know about caldwell having pain injections to play
but we need pain injections just to watch him play ;)10 May 2013 at 4:22 pm #113072The two goals we scored v Swansea were down to Caldwells vision in breaking out of defence, carrying the ball forward and making clinical passes on both occassions
I know for a fact that at half time the Swansea manager informed his players to attack our weak link – the left back area, which for all who were present soon realised that it was our weakest part of the defence
Yes Caldwell make a couple of misplaced passes, but so did many others, criticism on this scale does not help anyone

Well said, and you can guarantee Caldwell will always give 100% effort. He’s been made a scapegoat for Tuesdays performance.
Scharner is trying to cover too much ground for me which is putting undue pressure on an already fragile defence10 May 2013 at 4:24 pm #113075One thing’s for sure Caldwell will give 100% and that’s all we can ask for and I for one will get behind our skipper.

10 May 2013 at 7:23 pm #113102Caldwell will always give 100% and would die for the shirt if we asked him too. I’m willing to bet he wouldn’t have gone off on Tuesday like Stam did and would have still carried on ala Jason Roberts when we went up.
10 May 2013 at 8:20 pm #113109Bit harsh Egg. I read yesterday that Stam has a possible broken leg. I know the club were awaiting confirmation on the scan results & I haven’t seen an update on this.

In fairness there’s a broken leg and then there’s a broken leg, when I did mine my foot ended up pointing backwards, now that was a broken leg!
