      A million thank you’s is nowhere near enough gratitude you so richly deserve for what you have done to our brilliant town and its amazing football and rugby clubs. You gave us stuff that dreams are made of and brought us memories that can never be erased. Melchester Rovers, Warbury Town and Harchester United are fictional clubs that bore legends, well you Mr Whelan took Wigan Athletic and turned fiction into fact and made the greatest football story ever told. If ever anyone deserves a happy retirement then it is you for giving us fans some of the greatest days of our lives. If I could sum up in one word to describe best what you have brought to WAFC it would be PRIDE.

      Thanks again Mr Whelan for everything and you can bet that out there many clubs would have given anything if like us they could have found an Uncle Dave.

          Yip, much gratitude for this great journey our football club has been on. Not one bit concerned about you saving the rugbys arses and bringing them screaming to New Springfield but for the football part much much thanks.
          Just hope this present blip is temporary.

              Thank you for everything over the years Mr Whelan, it has been a fantastic journey, I’m glad you have enjoyed it as much as us.
              Here’s to the next twenty years, lets hope there are many more great times ahead and the name of Wigan Athletic continues to grow and become even more well known around the world.

                Thank you Mr Whelan for 20 years.
                In your first full season Darlington and Hereford made the play-offs, while we just missed out.
                The plight of some of our rivals at that time should act as a reminder of how things could have turned out.

                Thank you again for making our dreams come true.

                    Thank you for everything you have done for our great football club, only in years to come will we truly appreciate what a wonderful journey we’ve been on for the last 20 years, not only did you achieve success we never thought possible, you took us to the highest league in the land and threw in European football on top of the greatest day any of will ever be fortunate enough to witness supporting Wigan Athletic FC.

                    Enjoy your retirement Mr Whelan…hope its as enjoyable for you as the last 20 years have been for each and everyone of us

                      Thanks for the memories Big Dave, its a real pity that you are bowing out on a low with the whole racist thing and the current plight of the club, on the field not off.

                      I really hope the players understand and appreciate what you have done for the biggest, little football club in the world and bust a gut to try and help us stay up.

                      The name of Wigan Athletic is well and truly etched on the name plate of Football world wide and its all because of you.

                      Have a long and happy retirement Mr Whelan, you fully deserve it.
