Totally agree. About 5 years ago someone on here pointed out when someone was moaning about Sir DW that without him we would be playing FC United not Man Utd.
Times have changed obviously. Nowadays the comparison would be playing Aston Villa or Euxton Villa :S
Anyway, let’s hope Dave had enough puff left after all the speeches to blow his candles out!!
On taking over Latics from Steven Gage in the days I used to turn up on a Friday with samples of line marking paint and mark the pitch out at Springy in the pissing down rain because Pinchy had no paint left Dave said he was going to make Wigan Athletic a Premier League club. He did it. Dave delivered his promise. He not only delivered it but also gave Latics eight years of taking the piss. He put Wigan on the world sporting map. Took us to a league cup Final. Won the FA Cup. Took us to a FA Cup semi final and to the Championship play-offs. That’s not to mention building us a fine stadium. Dave is a legend and I for one have a such a lot of gratitude to him for this. For egg fans in Wigan he even saved them. Thankyou Dave, thankyou so much. Wigan Council and GMP you should follow this with an even bigger statue in the town centre for the millions Dave has put in your coffers.

The ripples of laughter when DW mentioned breaking his leg at Wembley made me laugh because DW was being serious!
Mr Whelan deserves this little recognition for what he’s done for us and the rugby. Made up for him. Was good to see Boyce attend, another club legend.
Think they must have thrown a party for Dave Thursday night, I’m assuming them fireworks (at the country club I think ) were for him?the man is Wigan athletic through and through and there is no doubt which club holds the whip hand with the ground .
That said his grandson needs to stabilise the club in the championship because relegation could undo all of this but the good thing is that the family is staying with latics for many years to come is this monument is anything to go by.
There needs to be a sort out in January and some significant pruning of the squad needs to be done. I am sure we will survive this season.
