pretty good article by one of our own

I can’t do the linky thing. but if you google “The Marmite Midfieler” you’ll get to it and maybe some cleverer person can put a link on here.

Some of you will not agree but I think new contracts for Jordie and Jean B could be the key to promotion.

If Uwe can convince them to stay, which I doubt with all the stick they get.

A good article. Here it is:

      Jordi Gomez: The Marmite Midfielder

New contracts for JG and JB – spot on.

Big ask for UR – as you say, the ‘boo-boys’ get on their t(a)ts, particularly, JG !

Wouldn’t you rather do a ‘Bosman’, make some dosh in the process (and avoid the flak) ? End of season promotion may be the key !

This article is bob on especially about Jean and Gomez being on the same wavelength, how many times did Gomez split the defence in 2 with a pass that Jean made the run from. I even heard a shout of again coming from ES2.

And ive said it over and over again name me another player on that pitch against Millwall who would have held the ball up so long until Macmanaman made the run? None.

I neither like or dislike Gomez. I like to think that I can see what qualities he brings to the team & what faults he has, but this article seems to me to paint him as Lionel Messi II.
It reminds me of a debate on here a couple of seasons ago where someone said that if he had better players round him then everyone would rave about him – from memory I think it was said that if he was at Man U he’d be one of their key players.
Sorry but I don’t buy that type of argument – he has played for a struggling prem/championship side coz that’s his level. I wish I was that good like, but if he was better than where he currently is then he would be playing for a better/bigger club. One of the managers of a top side who tend to know a thing or two about they type of players needed to challenge at the top of the game or even in that mid table top flight bracket would have taken a punt on him but they haven’t. That says everything to me
He is who he is. He is neither than modern day footballing genius indicated by the article or the devil incarnate as he is painted out by some of the DW boo boys. He is capable of some good stuff that none of our other players are capable of & he is also capable of some bad stuff that very few of our other players get caught out with.
For why he gets slated for mistakes & others don’t, see previous debates on Teale/McCulloch, Roberts/Haworth, o’Neill/whoever his midfield partner was!!

Yes Tyldesley, that exchange of views was with me.

What I actually said was Gomez would thrive in a team of better players because those players would do the donkey work for him – allowing him to concentrate on his game. I used Manchester United as an example of where a better midfield would cover for him (this season – maybe not so…)

Also, and probably more importantly, better players would spot a run quicker, would find space more easily and would generally read the game better – thus meaning he’d be caught less in possession.

The reasons the big clubs have not tried to buy him are: they already have a playmaker of their own, who is better than Gomez, or, they don’t play a system where Gomez would fit in. He’s a luxury player that most clubs don’t need or can’t afford to take a risk on when a more adaptable/flexible/UK-suitable player is available.

I expect him to leave in January, and I expect him to play on the continent – where he won’t become Messi II, but I’m sure he’ll do very well in a style / system that suits him.

If someone was talking bollocks I should have guessed it would have been you!!! ;-)
We’ll have to agree to disagree coz neither of us can prove why Gomez isn’t at a club with better players. For me though the best players go to the best clubs hence why Gomez is at Latics & not a club higher up the footballing ladder. It’s why he didn’t make it at Barcelona & why a normally struggling top flight/yo yo club like Espanyol let him go. It’s also why when Latics star players have been cherry picked that he is still here. None of that is any disgrace to him but I just can’t buy into that he would thrive in a better team stuff as I think it’s more likely that his deficiencies would be exposed by having better players around him – in a similar way to how many of those who have been cherry picked or agitated for a move away haven’t quite been as successful as they would have hoped at their new clubs.
Not wanting to get into another one of our debates but surely by saying that the better teams have someone in the playmaker role who is better than him backs up my argument that Latics (or similar level clubs) are his level ;-) !!

I think this is where we left it last time….

But, yes, maybe a lower end Premier League, or upper end Championship team is his level.

I’m not saying he should play at a higher level – because he lacks the pace and strength that better plays of that ilk possess – and therefore doesn’t have the same versatility.

What I am saying is if he was in a much better side (let’s pretend Arsenal have lost their marbles and suddenly he’s in their starting eleven), Gomez would spend less time waiting for his teammates to catch up spot an opportunity and he’d look a much better player to the masses than he does now.

So maybe if someone took a punt on him it might pay off. Pirlo was hardly getting a game for Milan before he signed on a free for Juventus and then the following season he’s nominated for UEFA Best Player in Europe.*

        * This is tongue in cheek. I am not comparing Pirlo to Gomez. Gomez is clearly a much better player.

Great, a Latics fan taking sense. SW – you ought to replace that idiot, Hansen, on MOTD (everything ‘sensational’, blah, blah, etc.). Good post.

Gomez is a good player who can certainly pick a pass, better than any in our current squad. But this article does big him up a bit too much in my opinion. Most of the times he gets caught in possession is because he is dilly dallying and not because other players can’t spot the pass. He just needs that second gear adding to his game and then this article would be more accurate.
The stick he gets from most of our fans is wrong and I couldn’t blame him for leaving us, I would have a long time ago.
