in 32 years supporting this club i have seen a lot of lows in that time, but usually pick myself up the next day & reclaim my optimism ready for the next game. my mood this morning is one still of shock, disbelief & anger – maybe even more emotions. take nothing away from blackpool – they fully deserved their victory & in all honesty, could & should have won by more. i watched MOTD last night to see if i could see ‘any’ positives from the game that i may have missed first time round & there were none.
last season was awful, but i stuck by the team, manager, the tactics but i’m beginning to wonder if i was watching last season through rose tinted specs & maybe trying to avoid what i didn’t want to admit. i feel that NOTHING has been learned at all from last season. had we have played with more passion, committment etc. yesterday, but lost by a freaky breakaway goal, a 30 yard screamer or something like that, i could have accepted that. but, the manner in the way we lost, the lack of the above qualities i have just mentioned is a REAL cause for concern.
i like martinez as a person & will always have fond memories of what he brought to our club as a player. he talks a good game & his ideas sound really good, & though i’m not suddenly going to join the anti martinez brigade, i feel that just like ince at blackburn, i am now beginning to wonder if he really is out of his depth at this level which is a shame, because as i said, i really do like the bloke & want him to succeed. i hope i’m proved wrong, but i can’t see this happening.
on another note, its been said on other posts about us having too many foreigners who use the club as a shop window & don’t give a you know what. i sometimes wonder if getting to the prem was the worst thing to happen to our club. after our first season the likes of bullard, roberts et al. all thought they were too good to play for wigan & left for ‘bigger’ clubs. i don’t exactly want us to get relegated, but i do miss the old days of divisions 1 & 2 where players actually wanted to play for the club. watching wigan in the lower leagues was actually fun – win, lose or draw. there was no pressure watching, it was a joy just to watch.
all i want from any wigan team i pay to watch is to see a team showing passion, committment & the actual desire & the wanting to play for the club that was sadly lacking yesterday & last season.

I know what your saying but we did have this prob in the lower leagues, when paul jewell first took over and whelan had to tell the players thatt he was staying and not going nowhere but the difference then majority of the players spoke english and knew what whelan was all about, The players now cant speak english and if whelan went in the dressing room now, our players would prob look at him and think who the fcuk are you, and that is the problem with the coaching staff, the players are prob thinking who the fcuk are jones and barrow.

There is talk that RM has lost the dressing room, lost the players which ever way you want to phrase it something is not right

In the old days of English speaking players – the chairman would take 1 or 2 aside and ask their opinion in confidence, then depending on what he is told the manager stays or goes

So who does Whelan talk to in the dressing room now to establish this ?

Cant see the backroom staff grassing the manager up as they would loose their own jobs as well

Now I know why Polly is employed !

        Completely agree

pskl, i agree with you on that one that jewell had the problem with the players he inherited, but he WON that battle then took us onto greater things. somehow, i can’t see martinez, jones & barrow winning the battle with our ‘international world cup stars’.

What ‘international world cup stars’ did Jewell have to deal with?
