I’m surprised nobody has posted about it already, but maybe everybody has forgotten?
Back in circa 1991-92, or something like that, we were playing PNE of all teams, in a midweek match at Springfield Park. A similar type of incident occurred. We had Tony Pennock in goal, and thinking the referee had given him a free kick, he rolled the ball down in front of him ready to whack it up field. However, PNE’s Micky Norbury (I think it was) suddenly ran up to the ball and knocked it past Pennock, into the Latics net. (at the Shevington End) The goal was given.
So you see, it’s nothing new. Does anybody else remember this happening?

I remember it well VAT.
The linesman had flagged for offside, but seeing as the ball ran through to the keeper anyway, he waved play on.
Pennock mustn’t have seen the referee, and threw it out to where he thought the freekick should be, and the knobender just smacked it into the net.2 November 2010 at 1:36 pm #50003i remember that one dave -but it was a little different to the nani one norbury didnt pull the ball back with his hand , it was from an offside that the linesman flagged for and the ref claimed he waived play on – pennock just through the ball out in front of him and norbury chipped it back over his head -there was only a couple of thousand on but it nearly caused a riot.

4 November 2010 at 4:19 pm #50161I was at that game and it was the 1992/93 season, for some reason it was a friday night game. Next day I went watching Everton V Forest with a fellow Latics fan and we were both still fuming.
I enjoyed telling the plastic football fans at work that this kind of thing happens in the real world of football
6 November 2010 at 4:25 pm #50252putting aside the fact you should play to the whistle its hardly an advantage.
6 November 2010 at 11:45 pm #50274The only thing slightly different to whats been mentioned about the PNE goal, when Pennock rolled it out, I’m sure the ref had told him to roll it out in line with the linesman so that a free kick would be taken from the right spot….maybe I’m the one that’s imagining things though!!
