Is it universally accepted that we want to be in the Premier League, or are there some, like me, who’ve rather enjoyed being in the Championship?

I accept that for some reasons, financial, kudos, growth etc we need to be there, but do we want to be there?

I’ve no interest in playing Man Utd anymore, give me Millwall at home on a Tuesday night any time. It’s a level playing field see.

Just a thought, albeit a futile one, and notwithstanding the obvious financial implications, would we not be left with an ultra competitive league if, say, the top 10 PL teams broke off to form some super league franchise, to drown themselves in their own financial greed?

There’s nothing between the bottom half of the PL, and the top half of the Championship. Every team would have aspirations to win it at the start of the season.

    Imagine.

From a fan point of view I prefer the Championship but unfortunately we can’t survive in this league with the crowds we get etc so we need to be in the Premier League.

At the moment we are one of the big spenders in the league with such a big squad and players in it. Once the pennies run out from the premiership we would be in trouble with our low fan base. So premiership is the aspiration. Also if we had no desire to end up in teh premiership, just surviving in the Championship, it would get dull.

Yay, we agree on something! ;)

Ideally, I would like us to be on a three-year cycle:

Year 1 – Promotion to the Premier
Year 2 – Consolidation in the Premier
      Year 3 – Relegation to the Championship…

… and back to Year 1.

Alternatively, I’d also be OK with a four-year cycle:

Year 1 – Promotion to the Premier
Year 2 – Consolidation in the Premier
Year 3 – Relegation to the Championship.
Year 4 – Championship play-offs but knocked out in the semi-final…

… and back to Year 1.

Not too much to ask, is it?

Could you not organise this with your contacts at the club or does he not work on the food counter anymore?

It is a catch 22 situation for sure ! :silly:

I’d go with that pattern Griff. At least we’d get a season of glory on a regular basis. I like the idea of that 4 year cycle! Let’s vote for that

          Cant have us agreeing…

We should also have a European adventure in Year 2 or 3.

When do we win the Cup?

Well, clearly, as with Edinburgh’s european adventure, these are optional extras to be taken in any year you like.

Also, if you do win promotion from the Championship, you should be allowed to “stick” and not go up. It’s probably pushing it a bit, though, to be allowed to refuse relegation, it that happens, and stay up.

          All those in favour…

You could twist and take the place of one of the playoff sides.

For example….we finish 2nd and “stick”. 3rd are then promoted in our place meaning that 18th in the Premier League can twist and attempt to win the playoffs.

I’d be quite happy with that myself TBH. I only mentioned something similar to this topuc to a LFC supporter in work the other day. I explained i would be more than happy being a yo-yo team, but your plan sounds good griff.
However, like the comments from the OP, i too am really enjoying this season. Just like the olden days of watching wigan.

i agree with you also griff, ive enjoyed this season in the championship, you go to the game on saturday expecting to win, but you could also get turned over by a team at the bottom like tuesday, but you have to have the ambition to get promotion, thats the aim, so one or two seasons in the prem would be ok. Its exciting staying up on the last day of the season i suppose but its not good being in a relegation fight every season.

              #129751

It isn’t the Championship that’s been enjoyable its that winning feeling that matters. If we were competing in the Prem and winning often then obviously we would all want to stay up there. Losing games hurts and when it happens week after week it gets depressing. After many seasons struggling at the wrong end of the table this time we have a winning team and hope. Wish we could have the same in the Prem.

I agree that if we are in the prem and winning games it would make a big difference, however the ticket prices do my head in and obviously have an effect on how many attend our away games, this season our away support has been a lot better .
