Is because the town is full of t ossers born and bred in Wigan, yet claim to `support` ManUre,Citeh,Bindippers or Everton,(from the pub maybe!)
Time these wa nkers took a reality check, and opened their f uckin eyes,
Rant Over. :?
13 November 2010 at 1:58 pm #50955Pretty much.
I dont have a real issue with those Wiganers who actually go supporting their team. I know Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and even Bolton fans who are born and bred Wiganers but have season tickets at those clubs.
The ones that get on my tits are those pub/armchair watching ones who come out with the same line if you tell them who you support, “Latics are shit, why do you bother?”
I bother because they are MY team, from MY town. If they are “shit” then so be it. At least they are MY “shit” team.

Did that take much thought or was it a Road To Damascus moment?
13 November 2010 at 2:16 pm #50959Its funny really wigan have only been in the top flight a few years and i can bet i have been to more top flight games in the first season than the average wiganer who claim they support, man u, city, liverpool, everton, even spurs and chelsea

13 November 2010 at 2:48 pm #50966It is, you’re not wrong, but then again the fans have never been there. We have a fairly rigid ‘hardcore’ support, plus a few people who have joined along the way. Not necessarily ‘JCLs’, but young kids who have been fortunate enough to be around as we hit the top flight.
I don’t think we do too bad, considering the towns size, geographical position, and more importantly the make up of the local population, and the fact that there are certain areas where people have settled who originate from places such as Liverpool. In many cases, these people choose to continue their family loyalty to other clubs.
What HAS happened over the past 5 seasons is that the extra fans have been gradually ‘weened out’. Those that have dropped off were here for the short term novelty. If ever we have a mad run near the top of the league or in Europe, something like that, they will be returning…..to be first in the queue at 6.30am when Latics V Juventus tickets go on sale.
Personally, I just accept our crowds now. I think that people are slowly realising that it’s most clubs these days. Even United tickets are far easier to come by these days. And did you see the Reebok when they played United a few weeks ago? Loads of empty seats. Far too much televised football, be it in pubs or the home, is what is doing it.

Is that some Dr who thing
13 November 2010 at 3:49 pm #50976We should never have built a 25k stadium. That’s why we get abused. If we had an 18k stadium we’d nearly fill it every week and our crowds wouldn’t get half the attention. Its because people see so many empty seats on TV every week that we get ridiculed.
14 November 2010 at 7:23 pm #51035agree with truelatic, as i’ve always said the same thing myself. as a kid i attended st mary’s in standishgate & was THE only latics fan in the whole of the school, whilst everyone else supported the rugby along with either man utd or liverpool. things did get better at high school though.

We’ve had 30+ crowds in excess of 20,000, and probably another 50 or more in excess of 18,000.
We are struggling at the moment to get to the 18,000 mark, but I’m sure as performances improve the crowds will steadily start to grow.
A capacity of 25,000 gives scope for growth, whereas an 18,000 capacity would have given little room for growrh and no ambition.
Take no notice of the media jibes, they are clueless anyway.14 November 2010 at 9:44 pm #51044A couple of other reasons for the drop in crowds are:
There is more unemployed now in Wigan than 5yrs ago & no concessions for the unemployed.
Wiganers can be as tight as cramp. Its not just us, but the chubbies also suffer shit gates as supporters prefer the pub to ‘live games’.
14 November 2010 at 10:11 pm #5104610 mins from the end of todays game at SB I noticed half the terraces were empty. ;) As you say football is pretty much a “winning and watch” sort of game.
From Matlock to ManU

Take no notice of the media jibes, they are clueless anyway.I doubt we are ever going to get much higher than mid table in the league than were we currently are, which will always bring similar crowds give or take 2-3k. That’s not being negative its being realistic purely down to richer owners deciding far too much in this league.
Its so much more inspiring for players, fans & staff to play/watch in a full stadium than it is to numerous empty seats regardless of whether its 15k or 50k. It looks better when your trying to attract players when they see full stands rather than what we currently have. Rather than a 25k stadium, we should have had an 18-20k expandable stadium with the money saved put to one side incase we needed it increasing to 25.

Must look great to the manager and players, eh?
Poor that, when you’re winning. :?
