I can’t help but feel a win in the semi’s will one and truly give us the kick up arse needed for the run in. I’m personally looking towards Sunderland and Villa for going down, either way, we need it settling before the Villa game.

The win at Everton inspired a good run. A win at Wembley could too.

But, win or lose, there is a danger of a reaction – through either relief or disappointment – in the rest of the season. It’s hard to know what mood Wigan or Manchester City will be in when they meet the following Wednesday.

A semi final defeat can certainly be damaging. Bolton lost 5-0 to Stoke in the semi finals. A week later they defeated Arsenal at the Reebok, ending Arsenal’s title challenge and leaving Bolton in eighth place in the Premier League.

But it was all downhill after that. Bolton lost their final five games of the 2010-11 campaign and slipped to 14th place in the table. They continued their poor run at the start of the new season and at the end they were relegated.

I fear that because of who the opposition is, should we lose, it will damage the confidence so much more than a loss to Chelsea or City would have. We simply do not have time to re-build it.

Should we win, then it’s down to the mind games over City. If they win there Semi, will they have FA Cup in there head’s when they play us. The next two games could be the catalyst this club needs.

Old cliche one game at a time not even thinking of Wednesdays game or any further on come to think of it

Whether you have a large or small squad, you should be thinking of the matches ahead.

Martinez might think how to spread his limited resources. Should he field his strongest team against Millwall on Saturday? Or should he hold some players back for Wednesday?

Manchester City face Chelsea on Sunday, so Mancini is likely to field his strongest team. On tonight’s form, they will certainly give Chelsea a hard game. Perhaps he will feel able to rest some players on Wednesday – I hope so.

He should stick to pretty much the same team that has been starting since the Everton game bar perhaps, after the performance at QPR, Gomez. I’d also question whether Scharner should start or at least not be kept on for the full 90 – he’s starting to look tired and a bit of a liability after a season in Germany on the bench.

Yeah, cos Gomez was the only who had a bad gane on Sunday, wasn’t he?

Scharner only played once or twice for Hamburg. He had an injury, and also got sent off. In his absence, they got a settled team and he was left out.

His loan to us is to show his parent club what he can do and give him some games. He wants to return there and break in their team. Fair enough.

He shouldn’t be tired at all. I don’t think he’s looked any more tired than anyone else.

Martinez has limited choices really, except in midfield. At the moment he is starting with McManaman and Gomez and finishing with McArthur and Di Santo. The team is certainly finishing better than it is starting.

I thought the referee made a mistake when he booked McCarthy on Sunday. That’s a shame because it takes him up to five, and he could well face a suspension before the end of the season.

If Scharner needs a rest, Caldwell could be considered for the Millwall game – it’s likely to be a physical battle. Golobart is an other option. Boyce could also drop back from wing back, with Stam coming in.

It’s a delicate balance. I want Wigan to beat Millwall but I also want decent performances against Manchester City and West Ham. Some points would be great, but I’d like to avoid any great damage to the goal difference too.

Is it ten cards then a ban although I thought that all cards are scrapped after a certain point in the season

I assumed that you got a suspension after six bookings. Does anyone know better?

Bookings may be written off in the later rounds of some cup competitions. But I’m sure that they aren’t in the League and the FA Cup. Suspensions can be carried over to the next season.

I don’t think suspensions are carried over to the next season might be wrong on that but I am sure that after a certain point of the season yellow cards are wiped off

                  FA Rules and Governance

Suspensions are automatically imposed for accumulating 5, 10, or 15 cautions in a season. There are cut-off dates for receiving a sanction as a result of accumulated cautions. They are:

                  5 31 December
                  10 2nd Sunday in April
                  15 End of Season

For example, a player earning their fifth caution of the season on or after 1st January would not earn any ban. However, if they received ten cautions by the second Sunday in April, a ban would apply. Players who receive 20 or more cautions in a season shall be required to attend a Regulatory Commission.

McCarthy is now on five, but should avoid a ban.

Caldwell stands on nine, according to the FA, and the second Sunday in April will be next Sunday 14 April.

Yellow cards are wiped clear at the end of March, I think and are not carried over to next season. Not sure of the exact date, but I don’t think you can get a ban now this season based on the totting up process.
