This from BBC:-
Wigan claimed their first win of the season in a sparsely-filled St Mary’s as Southampton’s seven-year wait for a top flight home game ended poorly.
Franco Di Santo rifled into the roof of the net to begin life minus Chelsea new boy Victor Moses with victory.
His replacement, Arouna Kone, then robbed Jose Fonte near the halfway line to secure the three points.
The match was the Saints’ first home game since their 27-year stay in the top flight was ended in May 2005.
The capacity of the ground is 32,689.
The attendance was 29,604.
It was therefore “sparsely-filled” to 91% of its capacity.
Gobshite!
25 August 2012 at 10:25 pm #92089Good catch. Does the BBC have an ombudsman (link) we can flood with e-mails to point out that stupidity?
25 August 2012 at 10:27 pm #92090Not too worried misell about the media having a go at another clubs crowds, but nearly 30k on? not a fekin chance. There were more gaps than Terry Thomas’s teeth. even their own fans say it was nowhere near the actual crowd.
milton Saint; Can anyone understand why the crowd was 29,604 when it looked like there were far more empty seats….
official stat was 29,604. But it looked bare! Loads of empty seats in Itchen and Northam.

Why is it that teams who play in red and white have this thing about exagerating their crowds? B)
From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!26 August 2012 at 2:26 am #92101I noticed quite a few gaps in their crowd, particularly as I’d expected them to sell out. Not to mention that (obvioulsy) there were gaps in our end that must have reduced the attendance also.
And for the last five minutes their end seemed very empty! :cheer:

Commented on the same thing. Failing to sell out their first prem game in almost 10 years, you have to ask if Southampton deserves a Premiership team.
26 August 2012 at 1:34 pm #92115Having now seen the crowd on telly, I would have to say the 29,604 is more bollocks than the BBC statement.
Perhaps I owe them an apology, but I won’t bother.

Of course they don’t. Small town, low crowds, no big name players.
How can a team like that even dream of being a Premier League club?
26 August 2012 at 3:11 pm #92118Football will never catch on , its a small boating town.
Support is piss poor.
West ham bring 20,000 up here.
26 August 2012 at 3:54 pm #92120They should be kicked out of the league and West Ham Reserves parachuted in.
