I’m still in a state of shock following our second half demise on Saturday, but after what happened at Spurs is anyone that surprised? For me, despite Birmingham’s good form, Saturday was a home banker before some tricky games. It makes the Stoke game vital and you don’t want to be going there in a mess! I’ll be able to watch the first half before I attend my brother-in-law’s wedding – I’ll be praying when I get into the church!
Now is the time for Bob to stop going on about a lack of character and start changing things around. One thing that isn’t going to change is the formation as I’m not sure Bob is aware that there are other ways to play apart from 4-5-1 with left footers playing on the right and right footers playing on the left.
So that means we need to get rid of Scotland and put Rodders up there -he’s much more of a handful than one dimensional Jason (as those of us at Villa Park saw). That was by far and away our best performance of the season and okay we may have caught Villa napping, but we were unbelievable. We cut Villa to ribbons and prompted O’Neill to completely change his centre back pairing.
Then there is the headless chicken that is Scharner. I love Scharner (not in a sexual way) but his best position is and always has been at centre back. You can’t knock his endeavour, but he’s not going to slide a killer pass through or score enough goals to justify his position as the man in the hole. We need to put someone like Koumas in there or even Sinclair as he would put the fear of god into defences with his pace.
Scharner should be playing next to Bramble telling him what to do as Boyce for me has lost all his confidence in recent weeks and seems to be making a number of mistakes.
Any thoughts?
7 December 2009 at 5:20 pm #14724Ithink scharner as been one of our better players recently as for koumas how many chances does this guy need given few games start of season didnt make the most of it when we signed koumas thought we had a decent player on our hands but he not shown a great deal as yet!!!!!
7 December 2009 at 5:27 pm #14726To be fair to Koumas he’s never had an extended run in the side since he’s been here. There’s obviously some attitude issues there, but on his day he is a quality player.
I can also think of only one time when he was played in his best position (behind the striker) and that was against Chelsea at the start of last season – and then he went off injured.
Give him a chance and see what he can do. He’s not a winger because he hasn’t got the pace, but he’s certainly quicker than Gomez!
7 December 2009 at 5:30 pm #14728scharner is the best player we have at the moment – but he is not a midfielder, he should be at center half with the captains armband on that is no disrespect to melchiot but something must change.

Sadly though, it appears that, after Gomez, the manager feels his only option is to play Scharner out of position in the hole, which speaks volumes for his trust in Gomez, Koumas and Kapo, et al. This is why I think we will see very little changing until January at the earliest.
Oh, and I think N’zogbia is doing OK at the moment, as well as Bramble.
7 December 2009 at 5:50 pm #14737not sure if scharner plays in the hole tbh. he seems to have a sort of roving role. he certainly contributes alot to the team and we would be worse of without him thats for sure.

7 December 2009 at 5:58 pm #14740sorry, i read your earlier post as though you were saying sharner was playing in the hole.
7 December 2009 at 7:00 pm #14743Koumas has completely fallen from the manager’s radar. I think that with Thomas out, we’re likely to see Scharner back there with Gomez in the hole.
Personally – as well as Sinclair on the right and Nzogbia on the left – I’d like to see McCarthy given a run out alongside Diame. More likely to be safety first from Bob, though.
Another worry is that two of Brum’s goals came from free kicks. Sjoke will be hassling Boycey and Bramble like mad on the edge of the box, aiming to get set-pieces in dangerous positions.
7 December 2009 at 10:12 pm #14772Our best player at the moment is by far N’zogbia. He is threatening and to be fair looks the only threat with Rodallega presumably wanting to be up front and Scotland doing nout. N’zogbia has been a different class recently and hasn’t deserved to be on a losing side. Especially on saturday as he was immense.
