….A welcome 3 points. A bit nervy at the end but thought we fully deserved the win. I still think he has the Gomez – Macmanaman wing back role totally wrong, but Callum did look more dangerous today than he did on Wednesday.
Another solid game from McCann and Nicholls, would have been another clean sheet only for that wicked deflection.
Onwards and upwards as they say and bring on the Ruskies. :cheer:
From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!2 November 2013 at 11:19 pm #12308431 games / 99 points still to fight for ! Steady, steady, catchy Dingles !
2 November 2013 at 11:26 pm #123086Agreed we really shouldn’t have been hanging on at the end. Nichols made a great save and solid on crosses. Defence looks solid. McCann gets better every game and thought Watson was mom personally although Powell will get the headlines, albeit it was his mistake for there goal.
Interested you call them wing backs, looks like a 4-4-1-1 formation to me with them playing as wide midfielders. I do agree though why not play them on there natural side. For me it should be macca on right and McLean on left but what do I know.

Agree. As much as I like Gomez, if he’s going to stick him out there, he may as well not play him at all.
2 November 2013 at 11:28 pm #123088Ben Watson’s best game for a while as well.
Powell gets better by the game. Any chance of signing him permanently?
(That was tongue in cheek :silly: )

Thought he did ok today was getting a few useful balls until coyle made his pre-emptied sub by bringing albrighton on for him. In fact if you could bet on his three subs today it was easy money.
2 November 2013 at 11:35 pm #123091They aren’t wing backs cos Boyce and Perch are playing full back. They are wide midfield players in a 5 or wingers in a 3 with Powell in the hole behind.
Depends on how you view it but wing backs they ain’t.
However in this particular formation Jordi and Callum are wasted. :(
3 November 2013 at 12:11 am #123094proper football afternoon 3pm kick off ,driving wind and rain and a hard fought performance that gives real hope that things are turning.
Nichols was once again absolutely superb in goal and another great performance from Powell.3 November 2013 at 12:36 am #123095As you say, we started with Fortune at the front and McManaman and Gomez each playing on the wrong side. The formation was narrow and balls were played though the middle to Fortune and Powell.
When Holt replaced Fortune, Coyle played McClean on the left and Albrighton on the right. Both ran at their full backs and tried to centre for Holt. Perhaps there was a logic to the play.
I thought that both teams tried to play football on the ground – Huddersfield have certainly improved from last season. Wigan still found clear chances hard to come by. They scored from a set piece and from free play through Powell. Wigan had the edge but Huddersfield persevered to the end.
3 November 2013 at 12:43 am #123096Thought gomez did ok and we lost our shape when he went off watson and powell superb

Nearly; it should have read 33 games, hence 99 points.

The current tactics mean that our play is narrow because both “wingers” have to come inside to be effective. If the fullbacks could get ahead of them it may improve you could argue. However we have another right footer at left back and Boycey doesn’t really have the pace now.
Everything is therefore through the middle and we will struggle to score from open play I think. It’s been said before that Holt can’t really do the holding job and as for Fortune….. I thought I was watching Heskey yesterday afternoon cos every time he got the ball he fell over.We definately need another striker come January.
Powell looks class and Gomez and Watson played well. The performance dipped I thought after Gomez went off.
It will be interesting to see who plays on Thursday as Sundays game at Yeovil is more important and as I’ll be at the Yeovil game I’d like to witness us getting 3 points please !!!
Onwards and upwards !!! B)

Fair point but against qpr didn’t he start with holt and still had macca on the left and Gomez on the right so maybe not
