First half before the goal, I thought we were superb, good formation, good passing, just lacking the killer ball. I see McCarthy played more as an attacking midfielder trying to play the sort of Scholes or Gerrard role…and was working..of a kind anyway.
My view throughout the game was we folded again….not too sure why we do this, is it a confidence thing?? anyhow, here is my player assessment:
Kirkland – not hit form yet…maybe we should give al-Hasbi a go.
Stam – really impressed with this fella, very good linkup play and you could see how Martinez wants the team to play in the formation.
Gouhri – Strong and quick…played well first half, had too much to do in second.
Alcaraz – He needs time to settle in. A bit of a liability in parts today.
Figurolla – Exact opposite to Stam, missing in action, Anelka ran rings round him all day…no link up with Rodellega.
Diame – confidence player, was involved in everything when we were good but went missing when it was going wrong.
n’Zogbia – good link up play with Stam and was our main threat going forward.
Boseli – bit isolated at times, this is our problem, nobody to hold up the ball in an attacking midfielder role to release either N’Zogbia, Boseli or Rodellaga
Rodellega – not sure what has happened to this guy, seems half a yard off and his touch was poor.Thomas – my man of the match, such an improvement on last season.
its a pity we played Chelsea as if we played a Sunderland/Bolton/Newcastle I think we would have won….Chelsea were superb and if anyone says that 451 and 433 doesn’t work, just look at it working today with Chelsea using it to demolish us and also WBA last week.
My thoughts on your thoughts.
If you drop Kirkland I think you kill his confidence.
Stam looked vulnerable defensively.
Gohouri and Alcaraz don’t defend as a pair and have no partnership what so ever, leading to mistakes. There was time today whenm they were 30 yards apart from eachother, what’s all that about. Alcaraz needs to hold his position better rather than just running after the ball.
Figueroa was poor, I agree with you on that.
I thought N’Zogbia looked a little jaded, but I agree with you about Hugo, Diame and Boselli.
I thought Thomas played better but he didn’t have much affect on the match.
I think Kirky might benefit from playing in the reserves at least 2-3 goals were his fault today. Also why not revert to 4-4-2? as I think we have 2 good centre forwards who could play off each other but are currently isolated all the time with the current tactics. With our 2 gifted wingers we could bypass the congested centre midfield. Maybe a bit risky but against the weaker teams it could gain us a valuable win or two.
Bob never changes his tactics only the personnel and thats what grates me most.
