Latics well on top first half, had 3 or 4 half-decent chances. Not taken. Everton hardly threatening, almost scored when a deflected shot hit the post. Would have been undeserved.

Second half, Latics not as fluent, but still on top. Until about 75 minutes.

At that point, Everton seemed to raise their game. They had a few set pieces, and got their goal through one of them. Another goal conceded at a set piece/corner. (We need to get that sorted out)

      A couple of points:

1 For all the criticism of him, I felt our play declined when Scotland was taken off.

2 Rodallega looks WELL out of sorts. His he unhappy at playing out left?

3 Was impressed with James McCarthy. Kid is only about 18, but definitly looks a decent player.

4 Stoijkovic. Couldn’t blame him for the goal, made a cracking save first half, from a header. Kicking not the best, but he doesn’t look too bad.

5 NZogbia. Once Everton countered his threat, we didn’t have much else.

6 Emerson Boyce was much better at right back.

7 More than apparent that we badly need a finisher. We played some decent football, but had nothing at the end of it.

The right signings, and I think we could be a decent side. :)

Spot on that Vat, but we do need stop giving away stupid goals, the laps in concentration have cost us dearly, there are far worse sides in this league, but we dont seem to have that defensive steel and at the other end, be able to take advantage when we’re on top. Today was similar to the Birmingham game, where if we had taken our chances we would have been at least 2 up.

Agree about McCarthy too, obviously he’s young and he’ll have dips in form, but he does look to have something about him.

I’m not sure it’s the defence that’s the problem now. I’m wondering if the midfielders know their role when defending set pieces.

How do all these players keep finding space, and a lot of the time have free headers? Are we playing a man-to-man marking system, or is it zonal?

Somebody isn’t being tight enough when we defend set pieces, and I really think Roberto needs to get studying the video’s to get to the root of the problem.

Also, I’m not too sure he should have ‘tinkered’ with the team, and made 3 changes. As soon as Scotland went off, we lost a lot of central strength, and Everton’s game seemed to improve, did it not?

You’re right about Scotland, whatever you think of him, one thing he does is put himself about and if the ball is played up to him he can make himself a nuisance for defenders.

              Quality Vat…

but I rather see you as a ‘Bells’ or a ‘Teachers’ rather than

“The beautiful hollow by the broad bay”

              ;)

              Great post VAT.

For me, however, the turning point was bringing Scharner on, meaning McCarthy was forced to drop deep. It took him out of the game.

                Yeah, good point.

Why make changes like that at 0-0 when you have been on top?

I don’t understand it myself. Only thing I’d have possibly done, would to have put NZogbia on left, taking Rodallega, who had a quiet/poor game off, and put Sinclair on the right. Or even kept NZogbia right and Sinclair on left.

Just don’t think Roberto needed to make the changes, though. Not at 0-0 when we’d been best team.

                Spot on Vat.

The West Stand section I sit in were screaming (actually we were mumbling) for Rodallega to be replaced.

He’s a stand-out player for us usually, but today he had the first touch of Peter Sutcliffe. There’s no way a goal was coming from him.

Thought we played well, we just need to take the chance, 3/4 of them were really good as well. Rodders didnt look happy, my guess is that he will be off. As long as we take our chances then we will be fine, I will start to worry when the chances stop coming.

Why didnt we switch Zog and put him up against Neville? I do worry if he gets injured though, he created a lot of our chances.

Most positive about the performance was McCarthy, looks good and will get better.

It did make me laugh the injustice the everton fans felt with each decision that went against them, that chip seems to be getting bigger for them. But what woefull stuff everton offer, am sure the synics would just be happy with the 3 points, but that was awful, diving and complaining to get people booked and win the set piece, which is what they are good at yes, but hardly entertaining !

                Onwards and Upwards !
