There is an article on the latics website about the retro kit from when Martinez, Diaz and Seba were here. In the middle of these three on the photo is Tony Kelly. Kelly was gifted, a player with a great touch and a fantastic free kick. It is however remarkable looking back at the relative conditioning of players now versus then. Check out the photo, you just don’t see players built like that any more!
7 October 2017 at 5:08 pm #162391Aye! Kelly was uniwue.
7 October 2017 at 5:12 pm #162392I still maintain that selling TK when we did cost us dearly that season.
7 October 2017 at 5:55 pm #162394Also known as Tony’s Belly!
Took a cracking free kick though.8 October 2017 at 12:05 am #162415I did see this one dnr and smile, he always carried extra wood did Kelly.
Kelly was good and could pick a pass. I’ve often compared him to modern day footballers in that now its all about running for 90mins. Kelly had some quality into his game, more than some of these modern day footballers do.8 October 2017 at 3:08 am #162416He is always one of the first Latics Legends that I remember ! Zico, Zico !
8 October 2017 at 2:32 pm #162428One of my all time favourites…. highly gifted, if he’d liked training as much as he liked lager he’d have played at the highest level….brilliant player
“He’s fat, he’s round, he’s worth a million pound …Tony K Tony K
(That fantasy fee dates him a bit !)
8 October 2017 at 4:55 pm #162431I went to the first friendly after the Amigos signed away at Lancaster City.
None of them played but Tony Kelly did – I wasn’t a Latics fan when he’d originally played & only remembered him for a spectacular own goal he scored for us at burnden Park whilst playing for Bolton.
I couldn’t believe that we’d signed someone so fat & clearly unfit. I don’t think he left the centre circle that day & he still looked 10 seconds from a heart attack when he came off the pitch8 October 2017 at 6:00 pm #162433It’s a shame u didn’t see him fist time round, of that era he was the most gifted we had.
8 October 2017 at 7:27 pm #162434Tyldesley, that was 10 years beyond his first spell…..I was gutted when he left for Stoke, then WBA I think, then ended up at Shrewsbury before Bolton signed him and I was
Equally gutted that he featured in Boltons great FA Cup wins at both Highbury and Anfield ….he ran the game at Arsenal and I think he scored one of his
Trademark free kicks.
In fairness he always carried weight but couldn’t get away with it when he was the wrong side of 30….. had he bin a couple of stones lighter he may well have lit up Goodson
as he was a die hard Evertonian…. tragedy is he’s a cult figure at Bolton now !8 October 2017 at 7:42 pm #162435Right, somewhere in my memory bank is these facts. We sold TK to Stoke after the then transfer deadline day which was allowed back then. The rules im sure were that coz he had signed after the deadline he could only play in games not affecting promotion or relegation so only appeared in a few games. We blew promotion ourselves after he left. Now if I’m wrong ill hold my hands up but I’m sure that’s how it panned out. Someone will probably be able to trace the stats from that season. It was a long time ago.

It was a long time ago.LIke I said, it was before my Latics time but I’ve done a bit of research & it appears that he signed before the old deadline day in March of 1986 but almost immediately fell out with Stoke’s manager who ordered him to lose weight & he only played in 1 game that season after he’d joined.
Under the old system you could sign players after deadline day but they couldn’t play until the next season – it happened to us when Roy Carroll was signed from Hull
EDIT – & apparently he is Joey Barton’s cousin
9 October 2017 at 9:41 pm #162457Nuneaton is on the money in that we did indeed blow promotion “….and in so doing around March time in a home game which I believe we lost1-0 …..Tony Kelly snatched the ball from Warren Aspinall I think when we were awarded a penalty…. and he then fluffed it …..there seemed to be something amiss on the field between the players before and after that incident and after that game TK was shipped out to Stoke in a hurry.
After being sold on by Stoke to WBA he got involved in a scrap during a pre season trip to Spain or somewhere like that with Don Goodman ….( who pops up commentating presenting on Sky now and again these days ) and that was the end of him there …. off to Shrewsbury for a good while until Bolton took him on and he had his biggest successes there (sadly)9 October 2017 at 10:20 pm #162458Again summat is telling me that our last six games involved us playing the bottom four sides and two others and we ballsed it up.
9 October 2017 at 10:41 pm #162459Tony Kelly,s last game was in a 2-1 defeat to Donny Rovers.
