Why do all the top pundits and managers say that 4-4-2 doesn’t work in top class football, whether that be Prem, La Liga etc.. and especially Internationals.

They obviously haven’t had a chat with certain factions on this board.

Not sure if that was a rhetorical question, but the 4-4-2 formation isnt felxible enough for todays modern game. a 3-5-2 or 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 allows greater options to change within a game.

Ooooh, you could get a lively debate out of this. I was watching (well listening to) Sky Sports this morning and the guy talking was saying that he thought Capello’s tactics were screwed up because he keeps on insisting to play 4-4-2.

FA Cup Winners 2013, sounds good that

In my very humble opinion there is no right or wrong, cutting edge or out of date formation & there never will be

The best formations are those which suit the abilities of your players whether that’s 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 4-5-1, 5-4-1, 3-5-2 or whatever

That’s why I think, amongst other mainly man management reasons, why Capello struggled at the World Cup. I mean what was the point of rigidly sticking to 4-4-2 as a formation when the squad he selected did not contain a single left winger in it?? It mean the team was completely unbalanced & whereas you might be able to get away wit it against Kazakstan you won’t be able to get away with it against the better sides

Likewise in my opinion 4-5-1 doesn’t work for Latics because (depending on how Sammonn fairs long term in the role) we don’t have the personnel to play that system. The main thrust of it needs to be having a centre forward who is a target man & who can hold the ball up, bring others into play, lay it off & then get in the penalty area. Latics don’t so we struggle to score goals – combined with a defence which seems trigger happy on the self destruct button at regular intervals during a game & its a recipe for struggling.

Unfortunately, just as Capello seems pig headed that its his way or no way, so does Martinez – I have to say that this attitude was summed up this week on wigantoday.net when Bobby had a little dig at the fans who had (prior to the first goal on Saturday) been getting frustrated by our (cough, ahem) patient build up play. His quote was somet along the lines of the first goal justifies how he wants the team to play football & they wouldn’t have scored that goal if they didn’t play the way he wants them to – so 1 goal by a team that scores under a goal a game on average justifies the way he plays & allows him to ignore the previous poor scoring rates.
He ignores the bits that go against his views & bigs up the small parts that he feels justifies it

thats what they say isnt it

they should then watch a rerun of every game in the last world cup in south africa – which was without doubt the most boring since its inception in uruguay in 1930.
boring football in big competions is now the norm not the exception, and no managers or coaches give a fig, its all about winning,if it wasnt they would all on mass tell their own players to stop cheating to win games.
every pundit who comments in any british media form, quotes the status quo and doesnt upset the apple cart because if they did they would not get access to dip their noses in the whole corrupt trough.

Scotland did the right thing and opted out of major tournaments years ago…

      8-)

Man Utd aint done too bad over the last 20 odd years playing 4-4-2 with good wingers and using all the pitch. If you have quality players you can use different formations but how many world class wing backs are there? this makes 3-5-3 difficult to adapt to if you have journeymen players in your team.

      #62404

Quite difficult to actually get away with playing 3-5-3 ;)

Quite simply, the best formation for a team is the one that most of the team’s players are familiar with and the one which means the best players are playing in their most effective position.

          End of discussion? Probably not.

Think a lot depends on the opposition, and if your playing home or away.
