Has anybody seen this play now on at The Octagon? I’m hoping to go.

Tull at Bolton Octagon 21 February to 16 March

The Octagon Theatre presents the world premiere of Tull, the remarkable tale of real life World War One hero Walter Tull – a talented officer on the battlefield and the first black outfield player in the First Division of the Football League.

Like the Octagon’s last great football play, And Did Those Feet, Tull is inspirational, dramatic and moving – proving that through perseverance and a sense of community, divisions can be overcome.

I eventually managed to get to the Octagon last night.

It was a drama which tackled many themes – it was quite hard keeping up.

To my surprise, Herbert Chapman turned up as the manager of Northampton Town and signed Walter Tull from Spurs.

I can recommend it, but the show ends on Saturday.

Herbert Chapman went on to manage Huddersfield Town and Arsenal.

At the time, teams rarely employed tactics of any sort – Chapman would later remark: “No attempt was made to organise victory.”

As a manager he sought to change that; after seeing Northampton lose to Norwich City despite dominating, Chapman opined that “A team can attack for too long.” He thus set about creating a tactical framework for all his players.

He won the FA Cup and two Championships with Huddersfield and then did the same at Arsenal.

I saw the statue of Herbert Chapman standing outside the Emirates Stadium, just outside the K turnstiles. In fact, it’s so short, I nearly bumped into it – it’s more like a bollard than a statue.

Anyway, it was nice to see the great man remembered. Wigan could do with a few more statues and fountains.

I thought the Emirates was a fantastic stadium too. Is it like Oakwell?
