Just seen in SSN that Liverpool are branding Whelan a ‘comedian’ over his ‘media sideshow’ during their search for a new manager.
Arrogant beyond belief. What do they expect? Should he have just rolled over for them?
Can’t wait to hear his reaction.
5 June 2012 at 2:46 pm #88735Whelan should wait for the fixtures to come out ,take the full allocation of tickets for the Liverpool game away and offers free transport with the purchase of a ticket and let our fans rip into them.
5 June 2012 at 4:09 pm #88744I think Liverpool FC are on very dodgy ground if they try to tell any club how to conduct themselves.
Unless they actually wanted to come across as a racist club ,the way they handled the Suarez / Evra episode was wrong from start to finish.
Get your own house in order before you start the preaching !!

Stoke C did similar recently for Man C FA Cup tie (50% ticket subsidy)

Nail on head (that Dalglish lost his job probably as much attributable to mismanagement of Suarez affair, as poor PL position).

5 June 2012 at 5:12 pm #88750Personally I think Mr Whelan played a blinder. He kept up the pressure….at all the right times. Properly and rightly ridiculed their pathetic management strategies and embarrassed them for the little tinpot organisation they have become in recent years – he even brought in his old chum from ManU to further alienate them.
Farewell RMS Liverpool…….you will not be missed.
5 June 2012 at 5:14 pm #88751Even the most staunch of LFC message boards (they are rather like rlfans in that they ban people who criticise) aren’t completely happy with Ayre’s response:

Spot on.
He hurried and hassled them. Suggesting RM had been offered the job, talking about RM wanting top to bottom control, when he knew full well they would never give him that, just served to undermine the trust in the negotiations between John Henry and RM.
As you say, an absolute blinder.
Ian Ayre, managing director (hired hand doing someone else’s bidding) who once won a competition to go on the pitch at Anfield.
Dave Whelan, serial entrepreneur and multi millionaire who played at the highest level of the game as a professional footballer and now owns a top flight football club.I would suggest Mr Ayre could learn a thing or two and should show some respect.

5 June 2012 at 10:25 pm #88771I think the Micky mousers (half yank half scouse) arnt exactly being truthfull,1,If rodgers was there number one choice why not chase him in the way they pushed for bobby, 2,why walk down a street in miami when they where called having talks,in full view of everyone.Cant remember in 30yrs employment ever having an interview walking round town. So perhaps some sort of offer was made to bobby, then they have had to back track because rodgers said if he wasnt 1st choice he was intrested
5 June 2012 at 10:59 pm #88776The point is we’ve still got Roberto –

Martinez is approached by Liverpool – as were several managers. Whelan grants permission, knowing full well he won’t accept the job, but fully aware of the exposure it will give Wigan Athletic, Dave Whelan and Roberto Martinez to prospective sponsors, players, potential fans etc.
Martinez flies to Miami and has an informal chat, plus a walk for some coffee and there happens to be a photographer in the side street that they are walking down, who recognised both of them and the significance of the meeting. (Did someone get a tip-off perhaps?) It’s an exploratory chat – nothing more.
Whelan then proclaims that Martinez has agreed to stay (what a man that Wigan manager is) and states publically that he will benefit from increased funding, an indoor pitch, and new contracts for his staff (what a man that Wigan owner is).
End results:
Wigan are permanently in the news throughout May and June – those who didn’t know who Wigan, Martinez or Whelan were do now.
Martinez’s reputation has gone through the roof as he was a front runner for the Liverpool job but turned them down. Players will want to sign and play for such a great manager.
Just to convince them further, Wigan are getting better facilities, which should hopefully also encourage the likes of Moses to stay.
Season ticket sales go up.
Wigan’s staff are getting new contracts, so even Wigan’s Assistant Manager has turned down a Premier League club in order to stay. What a club Wigan is!
Or am I being too cynical?
