….because the club has lost its identity. Players just come for money or a stepping stone, and the whole management of the club is poor. When we were little wigan doing well in the lower leagues it was enjoyable because the structure we had in place was what we were all about. But now the players are the stars and decide when they want to play for the club and when not to, the club can’t tell them what to do they do what they want. That for me is sad, but it is fact, it even happens at bigger clubs like cheat ham, newcastle, sunderland. We need as a club overall to be re-focused on who we are and not as a business, surviving in the top division purely for financial reasons. I am gutted that it has gone this way, but it is just not our club anymore it is the players’ club. Until that changes we are going to be watching poor inconsistent football that no one has any heart or desire to improve.
15 April 2010 at 11:22 am #29642I agree wholeheartedly. Martinez is out of his depth and we have too many journeymen foreign and English. This was reflected when Notts Co outplayed and out thought us over two games as Martinez and the foreign players had no respect for the FA Cup whatsoever. They were/are a disgrace.
15 April 2010 at 2:22 pm #29670I agree with a lot of what you say, but this has mainly been the case for the last 10 years. When Whelan first came in and put some cash in we had loads of people at end of careers coming for the cash – e.g Redfearn (try reading his book….). Jewell had to clear most of them out.
In my mind the only team at Wigan that had any real identity was the one that came up through the Championship and survived the first year – I’m thinking Filan, Baines, McCulloch, Bullard, Roberts, De Zeuw (cos of his earlier spell), Kav to a lesser extent, Ellington if he had stayed. Since that team was broken up, there’s no identity at all, and our longest serving player was booed off yesterday (deservedly).
I don’t mind being used as a stepping stone as long as its clear that is happening – e.g Palacios, Valencia, Chimbonda (if that had been managed better). We’ve also done well rehabilitating quality players who lost their way (Heskey, Kirkland, Bramble). I’d like to see more of two things though.
1. Trying to bring some local lads into the team. I know people will throw competition from Utd and other big local sides at this idea, but we could offer kids/parents the real prospect of first team football. It’d also build a bond between the team and town and maybe help with gates.
2. Try picking up more British talent from down the leagues or bigger teams reserves on the promise of first team football. Again people will say Cotterill, Folan etc, but we managed to persuade Moses and McCarthy and we’ve not even played Moses. He must be gutted he came here. And Sinclair must be too.15 April 2010 at 2:27 pm #29671Anonymoussaw rosie webster at the game shes mint
15 April 2010 at 2:44 pm #29672i saw a bit of coronation street the other night & it appears that Rosie Webster was conned by the fella she was dating into thinking that he was a professional footballer when in reality he flipped burgers outside the ground on match days
i think the same may well have happened in real life!!
15 April 2010 at 3:04 pm #29675Some very, very good points there. In fact you make a good argument for going down, but I’d still rather be watching us play the likes of Man U and Liverpool than Blackpool or Swansea at the DW. Can we not have a revolution and, like, stay in the Prem?
Why do I get the feeling that, right now, the fans care far more than many of our players? Maybe I’m just fickle.

We’ve lost all that now though, the club does need some heart and soul injected into it, but I’m not sure going down is the only answer.
16 April 2010 at 1:00 am #29736We have the core of a good team, the signings of McCarthy, Caldwell and Moses are a step in the right direction.
I’m sure we’ll hear what Martinez really thinks about certain players at the end of the season. Right now he still needs them to put in a couple of decent performaces this season, so has to manage their fragile egos.
16 April 2010 at 1:12 am #29740Should we survive by the skin of our teeth this season which I think we will, we will most certainly go down next season especially if the rumours of certain players leaving is true. I cant honestly see RM attracting any decent replacements. Dont forget the 3 decent players tipped for moving were all brought in by old Elephant man !! In all honesty bar a couple of RMs signings the rest are Championship class at best !!
16 April 2010 at 4:03 am #29751Considering the limited funds Martinez has had, he’s done well to sign three gems in McCarthy, Diame and Caldwell, you can probably add Moses to that list too, despite him hardly playing.
It’s just a pitty his striking options haven’t worked out.
