30 April 2010 at 2:43 am #31273Well done Fulham but hate their manager with a vengance.
Will never forgive him for the after match comments made bout little wigan when Blackburn beat us 5-3 in cup. He proved himself to be a right vvanker that day, couldn’t even take victory on the chin, horrible, horrible man!!!If he did ever get the England job, god forbid, he would deffo need a personality transplant.
From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!30 April 2010 at 11:11 am #31304You may have the advantage over me here JR being a JCL and all that – but can you refresh my memory of when they beat us 5 – 3 in the cup or was it in the 60s or 70s
I remember us beating them 5-3 in the league but Roy H wasnt their manager as I recall
Anyway Roy for manager of the year for me
30 April 2010 at 11:30 am #31305There was a part of me who saw that Fulham result tonight & thought “that could have been us”!!
If Whelan had allowed last season’s pre-Jan team to stay together instead of stripping it apart once safety was assured I believe we’d have qualified for Europe. True he would probably have taken the team apart in the summer & I just can’t see us having got some of the results Fulham have achieved but I can’t help thinking “what if?”
Whelan deserves praise for not letting Latics get in the financial mess that some of the other top flight clubs are in but I think that his decisions last January were the worst he’s made whilst at the club ranking even above appointing John Benson, Chris Hutchings & Roberto Martinez ( ) as managers!!!!

Blackburn beat us 5-3 in the cup (or was it 4-2?) in the cup when John Deehan was manager in 1998. Its the game where Deehan pulled his tactical master strokes of dropping his top scorer (David Lowe), changing his formation to 4-5-1, switching David Lee to the left wing & Jorg Smeets to the right (we have another manager who favours that too!!) & dropping our left back for the season up till then (Kevin Sharp) in favour of someone who hadn’t played in donkey’s (Steve Morgan).
Went 4-0 down before he reverted back to the team & formation he’d used all season & we pulled 2 goals back & had a blatant penalty turned down (for which the Blackburn player should have been sent off).
John Deehan described his initial tactical masterplan as a success coz Blackburn hadn’t “scored from any corners”!!!!Come to think of it, compared to John Deehan, our Bobby is a footballing genius!!! ;)

I’m afraid you are probably in a minority of a very few, JR. Would you say the same about him had he not made those comments about Wigan? Get the chip off your shoulder, matey.30 April 2010 at 12:50 pm #31320Well done Fulham but hate their manager with a vengance.

In defence of JRFATFAN, I remember what Roy Hodgson said that day, after the cup match, because for many years afterwards, it really rankled with my dad and I, who were fuming about his comments, aired on the radio, whilst driving home from the match.
He said “Wigan were never in the game”. Now to us, fans of a 3rd tier football club, who had just gone to a club who were, at the time, a top ten Premiership club and been beaten 4-2, we took that as being insulting and disrespectful. Perhaps he could have been more of a ‘good sport’, and maybe even praised Latics for their effort. (With a smirk)However, the truth is, we went there with damage limitation tactics from John Deehan, with both David Lowe, AND David Lee, kept on the bench. For 60 minutes, Blackburn tore us to shreads, and we went 4 goals down, through strikes by Kevin Gallagher (2), Tim Sherwood, and I can’t remember the other scorer….was it George Donis? Then, when it was far too late, Deehan stuck Lee and Lowe on, and we started attacking them and having a real go. We got two goals back (seem to remember Lowe scoring) and had at least one blatant penalty appeal turned down (typical Latics story) with the match ending 4-2.
For years afterwards, the bitterness about Hodgson’s comments that day, prevailed. However with much hindsight and afterthought, and in all honesty, the only thing Roy Hodgson was guilty of that day, was being TOO honest. Were we ever IN the game, that day in 1998? No. (We might have been, had that penalty been given, mind.)

How do you remember all that? Did you take notes?I was at the game and the only thing I remember was Colin Hendry letting Graeme Jones win everything in the air. The reason why has now become obvious, so thanks for that.
