Dave Whelan insists Wigan Athletic will not sell Hugo Rodallega in January and also plans to keep the club’s other quality players until the end of the season.
Colombian striker Hugo Rodallega has scored 10 goals in 37 appearances since joining the Latics 12 months ago, but has been linked with a move away from the DW Stadium.
The likes of Birmingham City and Stoke City have been linked with bids, but Wigan chairman Whelan is adamant Rodallega is going nowhere.
“We don’t want to sell Hugo, full stop, but we are Wigan and have to be sensible,” said Whelan. “But there is no chance of selling Hugo in the window. We are selling no-one in the window.
“Those kind of players are the difference between staying up and getting relegated. You’ve got to score goals to stay up. He is just brilliant, that lad, a wonderful player.
“Rodallega could have had two or three goals against Wolves. He is so quick but it wouldn’t go in for him. He is normally lethal as a striker and is a real handful.”
Building squad
Maynor Figueroa and Charles N’Zogbia have also been tipped for January exits, but Whelan is not prepared to sanction any key departures before the transfer window closes. He added: “We have got quality players, who will go to top six teams, but not until the end of the season.
“We are Wigan, we have to buy and sell players, and you can’t stop a lad going up to the top level, the top six teams, and I would never do that.
“Two or three of our lads will go to big clubs and I never stand in their way.
“There is a World Cup coming up and I’ve said to the lads ‘go and play in it and, once you are outstanding in the World Cup, the big clubs come calling’.
“The manager (Roberto Martinez) is building his squad. We have moved two or three players out.
“He is happy with what he has moved out and what has come in so now hopefully we can go on and make our Premier League position safe.”
Erm, I cant really see, Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, Villa or Man City wanting Figueroa, Rodallega, Maybe N’Zogbia. I would like to see Whelans preference of a top 6 team. If Stoke or Birmingham put in a bid he likes he will sell.
Asset Stripper
17 January 2010 at 6:38 pm #18576Its actually nice to get some honesty. No talk of warchests.
I think the days of paying 5million+ for one player is gone. Get use to it.
17 January 2010 at 11:04 pm #18652Well if we believe what he has said at least we know we are not selling out this transfer window.
17 January 2010 at 11:12 pm #18655I have the feeling that most managers will leave it until a day or so before the window closes, in order to prevent ‘auctions’ starting.
I have a gut feeling that a few offers will come in for our players. I’m thinking Rodallega, N’Zogbia, Figueroa, and Scharner, maybe.
Really hope we can be strong and say ‘No thanks’.
Have to say though that I wouldn’t be totally against Richardson coming as part of a deal for Figueroa. As long as we get a decent left-back replacement. Hardest poosition to fill, left-back.
19 January 2010 at 12:20 pm #18769Wasn’t this the response we got when Lee Cat was being sounded out by Sunderland?
19 January 2010 at 12:30 pm #18772Wasn’t this the response we got when Lee Cat was being sounded out by Sunderland? It was AREA51, In fact I think it was Martinez too saying that Cattermole was going nowhere and that Cattermole was looking forward to the new season. Don’t know what happened behind the scenes obviously but just hope he sticks to what he says this time. Don’t think he would voluntarily come out and say it if he planned to sell them anyway as he makes himself look a fool.
Here’s a thought for the darker posters on here, what if he was saying all of this so that the other Chairmen/managers think it will take a bigger bid for them to leave, and consequently making Whelan extra cash in his almighty asset stripping process. :D ;)19 January 2010 at 2:26 pm #18784almighty asset stripping process
James, young man, Whelan is selling to keep the club afloat in the premier league, to pay the inflated players wages, to prevent the club from ending up in a position such as Portsmouth and many others.
I am afraid you will have to put up with our best players leaving to pay the bills son…………………….or maybe you would prefer a Pompey situation, let us know eh.19 January 2010 at 2:44 pm #18786Wasn’t this the response we got when Lee Cat was being sounded out by Sunderland?

(Reply to John Arkwright’s post) This was a sarcastic comment made jokingly as it is something along the lines of something that certain posters on here would say. The whole part before it (in the same post) was my view. Granted I could have worded it better to make it more clear that the quoted part were NOT my views.
I would not prefer us to be in a Pompey situation obviously, what the chairman does is his decision and I as an individual have no problem with that, and I fully understand that we need to sell to be financially sound, I will still support the club regardless.19 January 2010 at 3:42 pm #18789James, Jimmy, thank you for (re-) explaining yourself ina a clear and precise manner, I’m sure we all feel much better now we understand your previous post.
