I always thought that there was some kind of ruling which didn’t allow Premier league games to be played within 24hrs on a pitch used for other sports. Haven’t we and that lot not had to move games when both at home the same weekend. How come then Spuds played Citeh the day after there was a game at Wembley the day before. And used by the only sport in the world more ridiculous than egg slinging. Has the rule been changed or scrapped.
31 October 2018 at 2:38 pm #172786Has never existed. The ruling is that any PL game must take precedence over any other event on the same day, so basically had Sky decided that Spurs v City would be the Sunday then the NFL would have had to move but in most cases these things are booked months in advance so it doesn’t happen.
The issue we had was that the media had criticised us time and time again for our pitch so DW wanted to protect that as best he could and it wasn’t believed that the stadium could be turned around in time which actually translated into DW not wanting to pay the staff overtime to do it overnight.
EDIT – We have of course both played on the same day since we were relegated but there is less hospitality, media spotlight etc etc in the Championship than there is the PL.
The game moving to Widnes was because Sky had said that Wigan HAD to play Friday when there was a game scheduled for the Sunday night as well that they could easily have filled and played at home.
31 October 2018 at 2:41 pm #172787Was there a game other than the Spurs one? Didn’t hear of it but don’t watch Sky Sports.

Cheers egg lad for clearing that up for me.
31 October 2018 at 3:06 pm #172792Cheers egg lad for clearing that up for me.No worries. There was a game moved in July once as well because the pitch had been dug up the week before.
31 October 2018 at 11:18 pm #172795Spurs v City was originally earmarked to take place on Sunday, with Man Utd v Everton playing on Monday night. It was only once Spurs realised their ground wasn’t going to be ready that the game was switched to Monday night at Wembley.

Can you imagine them doing that for us or say Burnley.
1 November 2018 at 12:21 am #172801Was there a game other than the Spurs one? Didn’t hear of it but don’t watch Sky Sports. An American peanut clodding contest fucked the pitch up at Wembley apparently the day before. I only know this because a bird at work who supports City was saying how bad the pitch was at Wembley.
1 November 2018 at 1:05 am #172802I thought at one time there was a rule which did state that nothing other than a football match could be played on PL pitch 24 hours before a match, sure there was a match we had against Man Utd and Ferguson invoked the rule which meant the Warriors had to move a game.
Personally think it’s a disgrace that Wembley is used for NFL and even worse that it’s been used for club friendlies and league matches…although I don’t blame Spurs for taking up Wembley, just should never have been offered to them. Particularly when the FA now make the FA Vase and FA Trophy finals take place on the same day, instead of having them on separate days, wrong when you think that to the fans of those clubs, that’s such a special occasion.
1 November 2018 at 1:12 am #172803You might have to get used to the DW being used for all kinds of events. These new owners will want to squeeze the last second out the place as a money making exercise.
From Matlock to ManU

Nope. Never existed. Strangely, the issue with fixtures coincided with DW selling the club.
1 November 2018 at 10:48 am #172807Taken from the Premier League Rules:
K.4. No Club shall have or enter into a ground-sharing agreement in respect of its Stadium unless the agreement contains legally enforceable provisions to the effect that:
K.4.1. the playing of the Club’s League Matches at the Stadium shall always take precedence over the activities of the other party to the agreement; and
K.4.2. the Club shall have the ability to postpone other activities scheduled to take place on the pitch in the 48 hours immediately preceding the kick-off of a League Match where, in the reasonable opinion of the Club, there is a risk that such activity might result in the subsequent postponement or abandonment of the League Match.
It looks like the Big 6 don’t have to play by these rules then, unless of course Spurs wriggled out of it due to the word “its” in K.4, as Wembley is not their stadium.
That said, there has been a knock-on effect. Fulham have now had their EFL cup game at City rescheduled for Thursday instead of Wednesday, and Southampton have had their premier league fixture shifted to Sunday due to Man City’s reserves playing Fulham on the Thursday.
The premier league is run for the benefit of 6 clubs, with the other 14 just being there in a supporting role. I’m glad not to be a part of it.
1 November 2018 at 5:07 pm #172808Good post mutt lad. What the greed clubs don’t realise is that the game in England is so strong and popular because we have the best league pyramid system in the world. They should remember that without the other 80 odd clubs that they constantly step on there wouldn’t be a big six. Its always been the same unfortunately.

The game wasn’t actually postponed or abandoned though was it which is another technicality for Spurs to get around it, but they are already breaching Premier League rules by playing home matches at different venues so I don’t think the rules matter anymore.
With regards to our situation, K4.2 doesn’t say that Wigan can’t play before a Latics game, but that their game mustn’t have an adverse affect on the Latics game which is probably why the decisions that were made were made especially last year when Wigan postponed a game and then switched it to Widnes even though we were in the Championship at the time.
2 November 2018 at 12:11 am #172814Really don’t see the big deal here, they had to find a alternative ground and found Wembley. Where we’re they supposed to play it? Hackney marshes? Shame the pitch got damaged but I am sure Wembley have the budget to fix it. Much fuss about something that doesn’t affect us. Don’t give a monkey’s chuff about the rugby either, other than the year it got destroyed in the rain, our pitch is in better Nick when the rugby season finishes than after the football season.
