On the 16th April 1988, Latics featured as one of the sixteen teams that qualified to play in the Football League Centenary Trophy, played at Wembley. The first round matches were played over 40 minutes and we won our game against Sunderland on penalties after a goalless match. We were knocked out in the Quarter Finals, again on penalties, after we drew 1-1 with Sheffield Wednesday.
16 April 2010 at 4:00 pm #29770Enjoyed my second day at Wembley watching Latics, having won the Freight Rover a couple of years earlier.
Good day out.
FA Cup Winners 2013, sounds good that
16 April 2010 at 11:33 pm #29791Went for the weekend, with the supporters club (I think)
Joe Mills and gang I think organised it.remember Man U last in the first game and all their fans left, even though the tickets covered both days of football. Typical manc to$$ers
16 April 2010 at 11:43 pm #29792You’d have thought the Utd fans would have stayed wouldn’t you, after all 90% of em probably lived within 20 miles of Wembley.
As for us, I’m sure Bobby Campbell deliberately missed his pen against Wednesday so we didnt have to pay for another night in a London hotel
17 April 2010 at 12:23 am #29794That was the worsed penalty I have seen.
Bobby tried to blame the pitch by stamping down the grass.
He would have got away with that on todays Wembley pitch but not in those days, it was like a bowling green.17 April 2010 at 12:35 am #29796That was the worsed penalty I have seen.

He would have got away with that on todays Wembley pitch but not in those days, it was like a bowling green.Bobby would have buried it if it had been with his head he could head a ball that mon.remember him getting his hatrick at Burden Park in the second leg against Bolton Good un Was mr Cambell ;) ;) ;)
17 April 2010 at 1:22 am #29799Not sure about the worst penalty ever, but it was a bad ‘un. One of the worst I’ve ever seen was Pat Nevin for Chelsea v City, it barely reached the keeper and I’m sure everyone who was there remembers the game at Spotland where their *striker hit the roof of the stand with his pen and then put the retaken kick in exactly the same place.
*Steve Whitehall I think
17 April 2010 at 6:16 pm #29826we went to wembley for that one in the executive suites on a freebie, i was in the queue for the buffet with aston villas manager at the time graham taylor, just after warren aspinall had played a blinder for them in their game,
i asked him if we could have warren back, he came to sit with us and told us about the new lad that he had signed who would actually be better than warren and watch him in their next game.well he was proved somewhat right as the young lad making his debut that day was david platt.
